With just one day left before the 12 x 12 in 2012 challenge begins – 12 picture book drafts in 12 months – I want to share some additional information about how the challenge will work.

Sign-Up Deadline

First, you must sign up for the challenge by following the directions contained in this post NO LATER than midnight Mountain Time on January 29, 2012.  People who sign up on or before that date will be considered the official participants, and therefore eligible for all prizes and giveaways throughout the year.

That said, anyone is welcome to sign up after that date and join in the camaraderie via the blog, the Facebook group, etc.  But I want to make sure those that signed up from the beginning are the ones who will reap the greatest reward.  It would also be too big of an admin commitment for me to add and track participants all year. So if you are interested in joining and you haven’t already, MAKE SURE YOU SIGN UP BY JANUARY 29th.

In addition to the Facebook group, don’t forget to tweet with the hashtag #12x to share with others!

First of the Month Posts

On the first of each month, I will feature a guest post by a published author or other industry professional with picture book writing tips and advice.  This author will be the “featured” author for the month.  Depending on the person’s availability, that might mean additional posts from them in the How I Got My Agent series, an interview with me, or other types of coverage on the blog.  I will also feature at least one of the author’s books on Susanna Hill’s Perfect Picture Book Friday series that month.  Likewise, I encourage all of you to support our featured authors by reading, sharing, and if possible, buying their books.

I’m asking each featured author to donate a prize that would in some way help improve our craft.  That might be a manuscript critique, a query critique, a marketing consult, a membership, a writing resource, etc.  In order to be eligible for the giveaway, you must: 1) Be an official participant (see above); and 2) Leave a comment on the first-of-the-month post any time during the month.  All official participants who leave a comment on the post will receive one point and be eligible for the giveaway regardless of whether they complete a full picture book draft that month.  However…

End of the Month Posts

We want to give participants who do complete a draft an extra chance to win.  So we’ll do check-ins on the last day of each month.  If you completed a draft, let us know in the comments.  This is on the honor system.  I will not ask to see or verify such drafts.  It’s your karma, not mine.  🙂

If you completed a draft that month you get one extra point.  For those keeping track, that means all participants have the opportunity to earn a total of two points each month.  Don’t forget to leave a comment on the first of the month post though, as only those who comment on BOTH the first and the last will get two points.

Prize Drawings

I will draw a winner each month using Random.org. Because the first of the month post will feature our guest author/industry professional, prize winners will be announced on the 2nd of each month.

And now the moment you’ve all been waiting for… Our first featured author is…

You didn’t think I was really going to tell you did you?  Come back tomorrow! 🙂

There. Clear as night?  Great, now let’s get ready to WRITE!

  1. Ohhhhhhh Cooool! Can’t wait! Only 3 hours to go till 1st Jan 2012 for me down here. Am sooo looking forward to using this 12×12 to keep me in check and ensure I get most of my 30 ideas in pretty good draft form or better…YAY!
This is the best thing since sliced bread, Julie. Thanks again for doing this, your a wonder! Happy New Year!

  2. I’ve got butterflies! I woke up with lines from the first story I want to write running through my head. Had to jot them down quickly before the dreamy haze vanished! Just to be sure…you do have me on the official list, right? I had that commenting problem for a while, so just checking. 🙂 Happy New Year!

  3. Ready, set, g…..Tomorrow, tomorrow!!!!
Looking forward to hanging out and working with you for the year.
    Thanks Julie

  4. Now i’m wondering…have I signed up. Is there a master list of members or attendees?

  5. Julie, I’m SO EXCITED about this!

  6. Julie, I think you’ve been reading my blog 🙂 You with the teasers there 🙂 Of course now I’m dying to know who it is! I would have been here for the first day of 12X12 in 2012 anyway, but now there is extra incentive!

  7. Seriously, thank goodness you’re doing this. Aside from my regular deadlines, I could easily just curl up into a ball and spend a month recovering from the last month + of holidays, but instead, 12 X 12 will keep me moving forward! PERFECT timing, Julie!

  8. I forgot if I signed up, so I signed up in case. *sigh* You might have me twice. Hmmmm, does that mean I get two points for signing up and another for each months comments? Huzzah! *wink*

  9. I am ready. I am eager. And your posts here and on Facebook have been getting me more and more revved up.

Here’s to a great 2012 for all of us!

  14. Hi Julie,
I’m madly trying to clear my desk and locate my PiBoIdMo ideas so I can kick off tomorrow. Am eagerly awaiting cool logo to post on my blog.
Having said that, I believe I signed up, but like others commenting, it would be nice to know if my sign up attempt “took”.
Looking forward to a productive challenge in 2012.

  25. Fun holdiays behind us 😀 Family members all returned to their rightful domains. I’m soooo ready to get my head (totally) back into the writing game! This challenge couldn’t be a better way to do that!

LOL! Was so tempted to fire-up my laptop at 1:30am morning upon arrival home from visiting family in IL. But instead allowed my head to hit the pillow 😀

Hope you all had a fun New Year’s Eve! Wishes for all the best in 2012!!

Thanks, Julie for putting this challenge together! Forever grateful ;D

  26. What a perfect way to keep the creative juices flowing. Thank you for setting up this challenge!

  27. What a wonderful idea. I’m in! 🙂

  28. Just what I needed…and this is such a doable goal. I always do ‘write more’ or ‘get published’ type of goals. This is measurable and possible. Thanks!
    Laura

  30. This sounds great, I’m in! Thanks Julie!

  31. I was so torn about participating in this, yet it hasn’t left my head since reading this first post two weeks ago.I figure that if I don’t challenge myself to write 12 PB manuscripts this year, who will?! Thanks so much for setting this up. I’m in and looking forward to all of your guests.
