12 x 12 new banner

Hello there everybody! Here we are with our first 12 x 12 check-in of 2014. Most of you know that January turned out to be a difficult month for me (understatement), BUT fortunately for once I was ahead of the game. I both wrote AND revised a manuscript the first week of January. I had hoped to be finished with another set of revisions on both, but alas that was not to be. I am motivated for February though and feel that, writing-wise at least, I’m off to a roaring start.

Are you reading this and haven’t yet joined 12 x 12? You have precisely 29 days left to do so. Don’t miss another day; register today!

For existing members, how did you do in January? Are you off to a drafty beginning? Let us know in the comments and in the Rafflecopter.

Here is what you need to do to check in for a chance to win a Emma Walton Hamilton’s course Just Write for Kids!

  1. See the Rafflecopter widget at the end of this post that says “Just Write for Kids” at the top.
  2. Click on the “Comment on Emma’s Blog Post” button. It will reveal the task, which is to comment on Emma’s blog post. Commenting on Emma’s post is mandatory and gets you one point even if you didn’t complete a draft in January. If you haven’t yet commented, click here to do so. Then you click ENTER on that option in Rafflecopter, which will then open the next two options.
  3. Click on the “Wrote a PB Manuscript” button. This will ask if you completed a PB draft in January. If you did, click ENTER, if you did not, move on to the next step.
  4. Click on the last “Revised a PB Manuscript” button. This will ask if you revised a PB in January. If you did, click ENTER. If not, move on to the next step.
  5. Submit your entry. Rafflecopter will track your points.

You have until midnight Eastern on Febuary 1st to enter your results. I will then have Rafflecopter draw a winner and announce it on the blog on February 2nd.

We are on our way to another successful year in 12×12!

  1. Am so looking forward to a year of writing! Have begun the year with writing a pb and revising one as well. Thanks for all the support!

  2. Started January redrafting a manuscript which I wrote during last year’s 12×12, which I like to submit to the Feb agent. Hope to start writing new manuscripts from Feb!

  3. No draft this month for me, but MAJOR revisions thanks to ReviMo! So excited to start submitting this year!

  4. I wrote…and revised thanks to ReViMo. It’s a great start to the new year.

  5. I wrote two (extremely) rough manuscripts and revised two. I’m hoping to keep up the pace throughout the year! I never would be taking the chances and getting stuff out there if this community wasn’t so supportive. Thanks, guys!

  6. So pleased to be beginning yet another year!

  7. Yay! Thanks for the motivation!

  8. I started with a bang and wrote TWO drafts this month. πŸ™‚ So happy to be on track for another year with 12×12.

  9. I think I have a good start to the year. Hopefully I can keep the momentum going!

  10. This month everything came together so nicely in the end. I wrote an entire new story, roughly mentally drafted two more (they don’t count for this month though), and revised an existing one that is almost ready to submit. PLUS, I revised lots of my illustrations with fixes that had been bugging me for a while, I am halfway through roughing out the illustrations for a client project, almost finished the dummy that goes with my revised manuscript AND prepped my paint boards to to start painting more illustrations for my portfolio and my dummy. In all it has been a very productive month. Whoohoo! Thank you 12 x 12. Hugs. T.

  11. Surprised myself by writing a draft and revising a revised revision!:)

  12. Writing one this month was actually easier than revising, but with the help of ReviMo, I did revise…more than one, in fact!

  13. Wonderful post Emma! Like I said before, it will help a lot with finding my character’s stories!

  14. Is there a submit button somewhere on the rafflecopter thingie? I don’t see one, so I don’t know if my entries will save. But I wrote something this month!!

  15. Things have been crazy around here this month what with computer problems, medical issues, and having to say goodbye to my 18 year old cat, Canoe. Yes, that’s a photo of Canoe that I use as my icon.

Even with all that going on I still managed to write 2 historical PB drafts and revised 3 existing manuscripts (2 PBs and 1 Chapter Book) along with a query letter which I will submit to one of the February 12 x 12 agents.

    I’m glad to be back… 12 x 12 rocks!

    • Hello SA Putnam! πŸ™‚ Nice to see a familiar name on here! I am sorry to hear about your cat. I am looking forward to being part of this writing community… it’s my first time!

      • Hi Mary,
Welcome to 12 x 12! This is my third year and my second as a Gold member. My day wouldn’t be complete with out it. You’ll love the Forum!

  16. Glad things are looking up for you Julie – whew! What a month you’ve had. Happy to be starting another year with 12 x 12.

  17. Julie…so glad Rocky is home and life can get back on track for your family.:)
Because of 12×12, I am on track as well…I did write a pb draft…and have several others in various stages of not finished. AND revised several (thanks also to ReviMo and Start the Year off Write). With Susanna’s Making Picture Book Magic class in February (and participating in Doris K. Stone’s Fearless February writing challenge), I have no doubt the I’ll have at least 12 pb draft (and hopefully a bunch of polished ones as well) by the end of the year.
Really excited to be part of this incredible community once again.:)

  18. Thanks for the motivation this month. Glad Rocky is improving.

  19. SO VERY glad Rocky is getting better. I finished a PB draft (and am quite a ways along in a second one! ) plus, thanks to ReViMo, I got one revised! Thanks, so much, for the motivation!

  20. All my best to your doggie and family. Can’t wait for all the good things this year will bring.

  21. I wrote a draft and took it to my in-person critique group, (including Diane Kress Hower and Wendi Silvano) They are great! Then I revised it. I’m tucking it away now for a while, but that’s one more in my portfolio. Thanks, everybody.

  22. Well, understandably so, I was a wee bit distracted with my book offer and contract to negotiate but I still managed to revise one story and write 3/4 of a manuscript…I know how it’s gonna end…just didn’t put the words down but maybe I can do that tonight!

  23. Wheee! I got to do the check-in post this year! πŸ˜‰

  24. I’ve been watching the days count down, wondering if I would be able to complete the challenge for this month, when in the last week it finally came together. It seems my creative mind was working behind the scenes because an idea from PiBoIdMo, and two of the prompts from Starting the Year Write just sort of converged for me there at the end. Feels good!

  25. Sorry that January was such a tough month for you, Julie. I was fortunate and had a more productive month than I have had in awhile with 1 new picture book manuscript and 2 revised manuscripts.

  26. I am just now gearing myself up for the next year of writing and critiquing !!! I am so looking forward to all the posts, featured writers, and general fun

  27. How does one “submit your entry” to Rafflecopter? I clicked “enter” on 2 of the 3 queries and saw it tracking those and then I logged out, but have no idea if it saved my entries, because there is no “submit” or “done” or anything button. Please clarify. This isn’t intuitive and I’m new at this.

  28. Wow, the month flew by and I can say I squeaked out a new manuscript and revised it 4 times. Looking at the long list of ideas and checking it twice to line up some new drafts!

  29. Kimberly Cowger

I exceeded my January goal!! Not only did I get a draft done, but since it was a holiday story I decided to go out on a limb and submit it for Highlights magazine’s Fiction contest!! Hope February is just as successful! So glad I joined 12 x 12!

  30. 1 1/2 drafts (thank you 12×12) and lots of revisions (ReviMo!!!)! πŸ˜€ Starting 2014 off with a bang!

  31. Yay! I got in my January draft and even got an idea for Feb’s draft πŸ˜€

  32. Did it, posted it but haven’t yet re-written ( again)! Many thanks for the opportunity!

  33. I drafted two and revised one. It was great having ReviMo at the same time (although also challenging to do so much at once!) And, Start the Year Off Write gave me the prompts for the two drafts I did write. Off to a good start! Or should I say the WRITE start!

  34. I feel motivated, energized and surrounded by supportive people who are willing to help me become a better writer. Thanks 12×12 for that.

  35. I’m glad Rocky is home and doing well. I’ve been dealing with a serious family illness for months and just haven’t written a draft or a book review this month. Thank goodness I have a stockpile of reviews.

  36. Karen Mae Zoccoli

Off to a good start, with one new manuscript drafted up and worked on two other revisions. I hope I can keep up the momentum, and love the support, wisdom and guidance available on the 12×12! Thanks everyone!

  37. I have written two. Revised those two and rethinking some area on each.

  38. I got a very rough draft completed but no revision. Still, it’s a start.

  39. I wrote a pb in a new genre and revised others.

  40. I surprisingly did write a new draft, came out of writing exercise for Start the Year of Write. I did revised a MS as part of ReviMo, which I then sent off to the RYS Contest. Woo-hoo. Now the challenge is can I do it the next month, and the one of after that, and the one …. you get the idea. I think I can, I think I can. πŸ™‚

  41. It was a great month!! 12×12 got me off my butt to get a manuscript of mine finished and revised and prompted a new group of online critique partners! So far 2014 is a success!!

  42. I revised and wrote too. So glad I did. It turned out to be a great story. Julie, so glad that Rocky is going to be okay. xoxo

  43. Thank you 12 x 12 for motivating me to write one new PB and revise 2! So glad Rocky is back home with his loving family and getting better each day! πŸ™‚

  44. Damn, so my post earlier didn’t register here…I did the rafflecopter… well I hope it worked. Thank you again for spere-heading this for another year…. Amazing job with all you have been through already. I managed to just get in with both draft and new revision. So good start for me, too. Glad Rocky is back home with you guys.

  45. I have really loved 12 x 12! I’m so glad I joined. The support & feedback have been wonderful. So far I have written two new manuscripts and edited three.

  46. I found this wonderful challenge late in January and spent this past week sick so thought “I’ll just try to write 2 in February.” I spent a sick afternoon on the couch with my 5-year-old this afternoon and we decided to write stories together. We got our notebooks, snuggled in and each started writing and drawing stories, checking in with each other from time to time. Before I knew it I was thinking “Well, at least February is off to a good start!” Only when I finished did I realize it was, indeed, still January and a had a draft of a new story done. YAY!

  47. I wrote two drafts, made one revision, worked on my middle grade m.s. and wrote two poems (for older kids)! Woohoo! Tonight, I am reviewing a draft to make it right. Thanks Julie for the motivation.

  48. Thanks to 12×12, ReviMo, and Start the Year Write, I am off to a good start.

  49. 12 x 12 is that swift kick in the pants i needed…thanks to an amazing community and opportunity. i revised three manuscripts in jan, two of which i’d been hammering away at for more than 3 years! i am ready to clean up another rough draft in feb.

  50. Two new drafts, and thanks to Meg Miller’s ReViMo, 8 revised mss!

  51. Two drafts for January, one NF and one fiction. Hope to keep that pattern up this year. Thanks to ReviMo several significant revisions that breathed new life into four stories. This has been a GOOD month. Julie, your next month HAS to be better–so glad Rocky is doing well.
AND, as always, super encouraged by everyone’s successes.

  52. Kathy Cornell Berman

Thanks to Meg Miller’s ReviMo I revised three ms and wrote one draft. Looking forward to another great year in 12×12. I’m so happy Rocky is back and looking good!

  53. Newbie on 12×12 and so far it’s been really fun and motivated. Wrote a PB draft and revised another.

  54. Great tip – Finding the essential question of the story. Thanks for this measuring stick!

  55. Finding inspiration AND practical advice at every turn…so glad I found 12 X 12!!

  56. Newbie here – finished and revised a PB. So excited!!

  57. I didn’t write any new manuscripts this month, but I revised a ton. I’m going to write something new in February! Here’s to a new month!

  58. Errrr, missed the cutoff to check in. I did revise 2, and finished several I had been toying with, but did not write an entire new one from scratch. I did finish my dummy, though, and a painting. πŸ™‚

  59. I missed the cutoff to check in too. I did complete a draft for January. I know I missed the contest, but does anyone know if we have to indicate on the 12 x 12 site that we completed a draft?

  60. Off to a pretty good start this year. Wrote and revised two new PBs this month. Plus a new chapter of my MG. Plus a new song! Plus I got my kids to write their Christmas thankyous. That should count for something.

  61. Oops, I missed the cut-off date to enter in Rafflecopter, too, but I revised a draft in January, and I’m happy about that! Loving exploring the forums!

  62. Missed the cut-off, too. But I revised two ms.

  63. I was too late to enter the give away but I did both write a manuscript and revise a few in ReviMo. I have sent the MS for critiques and entered it in a competition and will send it for a rating. I suspect it wont win the competition but I do think it is a worthwhile story to be sending next month. Already started on this months MS and have entered the PB marathon so I have three outlines already happening and an idea for a chapter book.

  64. Newbie, so I missed link about entering the Raffle but I did revise on pb ms in Jan and started work on another PB along with a MG ms.

  65. I was also too late for the give away, obviously, but I did write a really messy draft in January! I’m putting that aside for now, though, and already almost done with my Feb draft.
