It is almost impossible to believe, but this coming Thursday, November 18th, is the one-year anniversary of this blog.  I started with humble beginnings and hopes that the blog would help me grow more accustomed to sharing my writing with others.  It was also a huge step for me to announce to the world that I was a writer.

I have gotten so much more from writing this blog than I could have ever imagined: friendship, encouragement, education, and even confidence.  It seems as though every time I get a little down in the dumps about where I am in life or in writing, someone leaves a thoughtful comment on one of my posts, and I once-again feel inspired and optimistic.

I’ll be writing more this week about the blog itself and my plans for its future, but first, I want to toast each and every one of you who has come by the blog this year.  It is only because of you all that blogging has been so rewarding for me.  For that reason, I am offering what I hope is a fantastic prize that any of you would enjoy – writer, friend, family member or all of the above.

Drum roll…

What are the chances that my blogiversary would land on the very day that Harry Potter Deathly Hallows #1 hits theaters?  Or that I would be right in the middle of re-reading the series in anticipation? (I’m on The Half Blood Prince as we speak, but I understand I only have to read through DH chapter 24 in order to go see the movie).  Whatever the chances, it seems only appropriate to have a Harry Potter-themed giveaway, so here it is: a boxed set of all six of the previous Harry Potter movies.  What’s more, the winner can choose DVD or Blu-Ray format.

You don’t have to be a follower to win, but if you like what you see on the blog, please consider coming back and joining the discussion.  Everyone who wants to enter needs to answer the following in the comments:

Which is your favorite Harry Potter Book?  Which is your favorite movie?  If the two are not the same, why not?

If you haven’t read the books, do you plan to? (No is an acceptable answer :-))

You can get an extra entry for tweeting the contest, and 2 extra entries for blogging about the contest and providing a link back to this post.  Just put the links to the tweet/blog post in the comments to ensure they get counted.

Contest ends at – when else? – 12:01 Eastern Time on Thursday the 18th (I know it’s really Friday, but the release date says Thursday, so…).  Good luck!

Oh, and if you want more fun, check out my Harry Potter wishlist and add yours!  Finally, if you blogged about Harry this week, feel free to include a link to your post(s) in the comments.  I’d love to check them out.

P.S. I’ve edited this to add my own answer to the question! My favorite book was The Prisoner of Azkaban.  It retained some of the innocence and wonder of the first two books, but included major foreshadowing of the darkness to come.  The plot ramped up several notches, and I LOVED the introduction of the dementors and the Patronus charm.  I also liked the movie version, but I think my favorite movie was The Goblet of Fire.  They did a great job portraying the Yule Ball and the Triwizard tournament.

Sorcerer's Stone

Chamber of Secrets

Prisoner of Azkaban

RPatz may have died as Cedric in Goblet of Fire, but he was reborn as eternal hottie Edward Cullen soon enough...

Order of the Phoenix

Half Blood Prince

  1. favorite book was Half Blood Prince. I loved learning more about Snape and his backstory since he was such a grey character. It made me understand him more while creating more of a shroud of secrecy.

my favorite movie was The Sourcerer’s Stone because it was the closest to the books. I hate when they stray…

  2. What a super-sweet contest, Julie!! Congratulations on your one year of awesomeness!

I have only read the first three books (in the middle of book four as we speak) because I’m reading them to/with my son. But so far, I’d say book three has been my favorite. And I’ve only seen the first movie so far, so it wins that vote. I’m loving HP and anxious to get through them all! I know most of what happens throughout, but I need to know the how and why!

I’ll tweet about the contest and I’ll put something on my blog about it tomorrow!

  3. Wow, this is an amazing contest.

Okay, the books: Prisoner of Azkaban was my favourite until Deathly Hallows came out. So, I don’t want to call it a tie, because I like them for different reasons, but those two are my joint favourites.

Movies: I’m not good at movies that come from books. My husband says I’m a snob; I say my imagination is better than special effects. 🙂 I haven’t even seen Order of the Phoenix or Half-Blood Prince, even though I’ve decided to re-take the plunge with Deathly Hallows. So, of the four movies I’ve seen, it’s a tie between Prisoner of Azkaban and Goblet of Fire. PoA because it’s one of my favourite books, as I’ve said, and I loved the choices of actors for Sirius and Remus. And Goblet of Fire has lots of action and David Tennant. What’s not to love? 😉

And now that I’ve thought about it so intently, I’m thinking I should have a re-read (and perhaps a re-watch) during the holidays. 🙂

The first Harry Potter book/movie is my favorite just because you knew something wonderful and lasting was in the works.I knew these books were going to be epic when Harry let the snake out of the cage at the zoo.I will never forget how I felt when I read that book for the first time and when I saw the movie for the first time.

    Blogged 2
Happy Blogiversary to you!!!!May you be blessed with many happy bloggy years to come. Also may you continue to enlighten the world with your presence and wisdom.

Thank you for this chance and take good care.

  7. Congratulations to you and your blog!! And I love Harry Potter! My favorite book has to be The Prisoner of Azkaban. I just loved the introduction of the Dementors! As far as the movie, I’m going to have to go with The Goblet of Fire. I loved seeing pretty little Hermione going to the big dance with Krum. And Ron’s reaction. heehee.

  8. Congratulations on your blogiversary! I always enjoy your posts.

As for Harry Potter, how can one choose? I love them all. I have them all. Can’t wait to see the movie. Thinking about whether or not it would be wise to see it in an IMAX theatre….

  9. Congratulations on your First Anniversary. So glad that you have benefited from your experiences in the blogosphere. It’s definitely a richer and warmer place with you here!

Favorite Book: The Half Blood Prince because (SPOILER ALERT) when Snape killed Dumbledore I thought it was just a ruse and that Dumbledore would return in Book 7. That, in fact, is my only complaint about the entire series . . . that Dumbledore didn’t have a trick up his sleeve to bring himself (and Harry’s parents) back to life. Can you tell I like HAPPY ENDINGS?

Favorite Movie: The first, Sorceror’s Stone, because it helped me to envision the rest of the series. Once I saw what Hogwarts looked like and how stairways could shift and portraits could talk and what a Quidditch field looked like and how you could board a train by running full tilt at a post and . . . all the other wonderful imagery . . . the remaining books in the series came “alive” for me.

I’ll post a link to this on FB now, and try to blog about the contest tomorrow.

  10. Congrats on you blogversary!
I myself have only read the first book, and it was pretty good. I saw the first movie too when it was on TV.
My nieces & nephews on the other hand have likely seen all the movies & read all the books, and that’s who I am entering for !
Jut read your email… and thought what a nice gift this would be if I am luck enough to win it 🙂

I just followed you on twitter- I am @tannawings

  12. Congratulations, Julie! I haven’t read any of the books, but I plan to eventually. I bought them all for my step-son and I still have them here at home for him. He’s read them all NUMEROUS times! I’ve only seen the first three or four movies. I love them all. I guess my favorite is the first one because it is the beginning of all the magic. It sets the stage. It’s where the world is created. Here’s to hoping… Now off to tweet this!

  13. Julie, congratulations on the first-year anniversary!

Now, to answer the question, I’d say the first book is my favourite. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen any of the movies (hey, does that make me a hands-down winner so that I can watch those now? ;)) but I can vouch for the first book in the series aka “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Why? Simply put, it was like a window I could peek into. A peek into a world unknown, unrealized but well-understood. A brilliant gateway, just like a Portkey to another dimension, another place.

I put the first book as best because it was an entrance to this novel world, and which enabled the following of rest in the series. Also, since it was the first, it was “pure” in its own sense.

  14. Congrats on you blogversary! I’m so looking forward to these last two Harry Potter movies, but so far I think The Prisoner Of Azkaban is my favorite. And I’m almost embarrassed to say, but I haven’t read the books yet. My son owns them all and I do plan to read them, but I can’t answer that part of the question yet!

  15. Congratulations on you anniversary! quite the accomplishment!
I loved the 3rd book Prisoner of Azkaban but was disappointed in the movie. I love it now but it was such a shock the first time I saw it, it was so much darker than the previous ones. The 4th Movie Goblet of Fire was my favorite……I never thought they could put this book into a movie but it turned out as perfection! Love it!

I sent out a tweet for you great giveaway!!/scarletredwill/status/4741328726401024

  16. Congratulations on your blogiversary Julie. It has been lovely getting to know you over the year. best wishes Catherine

Great competition. I read the first book and have watched three movies so far.

    I tweeted: Julie’s Blogiversary Giveaway:

  17. I loved the Half Blood Prince (book and movie). It was so amazingly well done!

  18. My favorite book was Sorcerer’s Stone, actually. It just really captured me. I’m not sure about favorite movie. Maybe Goblet of Fire, because I really loved seeing the challenges and the other schools on the screen!

Thank you so much for stopping by!!! You are awesome! What an awesome giveaway!!! I love it!! The movies are fantastic and what an awesome thing to win! I know I could use a new set of books, they are all worn out… I think I’m looking forward to getting a new set of DVD’s and books 🙂

  20. Hi Julie,
I read this yesterday & didn’t comment because I can’t decide which is my favorite. I just finished reading all 7 about 2 months ago & I read one after the other so it’s one big story for me right now. I, like you, wanted to finish before the DH movie came out. My daughter raced to finish them too. So, I guess I like them all.

Mostly, I just wanted to say Happy Blogiversary!

  21. I have not read the books (well, technically my family read the first one aloud on a long car ride back when it first came out, but I’m not counting that as my having read it) but I absolutely love the movies. I do actually plan to read the books but I am purposely putting them off. My reasoning is this: all of my friends have read and loved all 7 books. In the beginning, my not reading them was a form of not conforming to the norm just to be able to join conversation. Over time, however, I have decided that I do want to read them. The thing I have noticed about the movies though is that all of my friends who have read the books are annoyed with the way the movie does not include every detail of the books. They go into the theater all excited and come out complaining that their favorite part wasn’t included. So, in order to keep my love of the movies pure, I’ve decided that I will not start reading the books until all 8 movies have been released. That way, I can enjoy the movies for what they are and not be disappointed when they don’t match up exactly. Having said all that, the 6th movie is my favorite so far. I thought the 6th was the most like a “real movie” out of all of them. It has it all: humor, adventure and suspense, relationship drama! It makes you laugh, makes you cry – it’s excellent!

Also I tweeted about your contest:

  22. Hi, Julie! My favorite is Prizoner of Azkaban, too! It held lots of great surprises and the Patronus charm rocked. I think that’s my favorite movie as well, in part because that’s the last one I saw. I’m hoping to remedy that soon…

I just tweeted about it, too:

RT @jafhedlund: #blogiversary #giveaway of boxed set of first 6 Harry Potter movies. Don’t miss out:

  23. My favorite book is Half-Blood Prince because of the rising tension and character development. It also has some great funny moments.

I’m with you on Goblet of Fire being the best movie too. The tri-wizard tournament holds up really well. I think the sets are the most striking in that film too.

    My tweet:!/jimhill/status/5440404782587904

    Congrats on the blogiversary!
