12 x 12 new bannerWell, folks, we’ve made it to the last day of 12 x 12 in 2013. So hard to believe another whole year of picture book writing, revising and submitting has come to an end. Part of me is sad, but most of me just wants to CELEBRATE what we all accomplished together this year!

So many of you got agents, got published, won contests, submitted your work, launched a website or a blog, learned to make videos, attended conferences and formed critique groups. Just as important, I have no doubt that each one of us faced the demons of disappointment and self-doubt this year. All of us, I am sure, at some point decided to dust ourselves off and keep. going. Each step we took this year, large or small, became a step in the direction of our collective dream to bring more picture books into the world. Just IMAGINE how much new work is out there as a result of 12 x 12. It’s both staggering and inspiring.

As for the actual checking-in part, some of you will be reporting that you finished your twelfth manuscript and are therefore an official “winner” of the challenge. If that is the case, please contact me so I can make sure you get on the 2013 Winner’s Wall.

This December, for me, had extreme highs and extreme lows. Nonetheless, I wanted to “finish strong” this year and follow my own advice to keep going. So in the last few days, I wrote a draft. It’s terrible right now, but I love it. I think it’s going places.

Here’s my full tally for the year. I found myself pleasantly surprised that I had written more than I thought I did. THAT is the beauty of the accountability of 12 x 12! 🙂

  • January: I wrote one-half of a PB draft and the first chapter of a chapter book that I am not going to finish. Loved writing it though!
  • February: No draft
  • March: TWO new drafts, plus two revisions of previous drafts!
  • April: No draft
  • May: No draft
  • June: HONK! No draft again
  • July: STILL no draft
  • August: EXTENSIVE revision on an existing draft – a revision I was particularly pleased with.
  • September: Wrote one draft and revised another – woo hoo!
  • October: No new draft
  • November: Wrote a new draft!
  • December: Wrote a new draft!

All told that’s 5.5 new picture book drafts, one chapter of a chapter book, and four revisions. I’ll take it!

How about you? Whether you wrote 12 drafts or one draft or simply pushed yourself in a new way, take a moment to celebrate your achievements on this last day of the year. Then come back for 12 x 12 in 2014!! I’ll meet you there! 🙂

How did you do in December? Let us know in the comments and of course in the Rafflecopter.

Here is what you need to do to check in for a chance to win a 12 x 12 2014 Little GOLDen Book Membership!

  1. Julie,
I hope 2014 is your best one yet.
Thank you for allowing us to share in your publishing journey and encouraging us to become a family through 12 x 12. This past year has been very special to me and know I have blossomed with my new knowledge and friendships found within this great group of people.

  2. step five above says, after you click on the things you’ve done, submit your entry. But there isn’t really a submit button or anything, right? So just clicking on the things we’ve accomplished this month IS the entry, yes?

  3. Yay Julie and YaY all of us! Thank you Julie. FOR EVERYTHING!

I was saddened that my video won’t be on the wall this year (stupid computer), but happy that I did 16 drafts. Woot woot!

  4. + I did 12 revisions. Happy New Year y’all!

  5. Something funny happened here. I checked the three boxes, then realized I hadn’t logged in. I did that with my email address. It said, “Hello Robb,” then popped up a box to log in with Facebook, which I did, but then all three boxes were unchecked, so I checked them again. In other words I may have entered twice.

  6. Whew! I am just so happy I managed to snuck in with the 12 drafts, not to mention doing an awful lot of revising this year, which is all thanks to my lovely critique group. There have been times when I felt like I was being chased in one of those action-pack movies sliding in under the roller door as it comes down….. Yeah! *punches the air* Just made it!

Thank you Julie so much for all you have done for us through the year. I certainly do not know where you get your energy from.

One thing I do know, I am looking forward to continuing with 12×12 in 2014, so as I prepare to go out with hubby (in a few minutes) for dinner and then stand around our city’s waterfront, watching the fireworks overhead seeing in the New Year. I want to take this opportunity to wish you and everyone in 12×12 a Happy and Successful New Year, for 2014.

  7. thank you Julie for all the amazing things you do for us! I loved the 12 x 12 membership and want to do it again in 2014! Julie you and all the talented writers and illustrators I have met along this wonderful journey keep me moving forward…thank you!

  8. Thank you Julie for being such a great support and encouragement. I’m having a year off next year to get some things self published and focus on art (crazy me) and I’ll be back hopefully with lots to submit here in 2015. A lot of my pb ms just aren’t pbs and I have to let them go where they need to go. Do let me know which month your My Love… book is out and I’ll paint you :0) Happy New Year all!

  9. Another amazing 12×12 year that has proven to me why this is The Challenge for Me. Definitely keeps me writing! I had nine new stories, and lots of revising!

  10. 2013 turned out to be a very lucky year for me, thanks in no small part to all I gained from 12 x 12. Thanks so much to Julie, and all the 12 x 12ers who taught me and encouraged me. I’ll be signing up for next year as well.

  11. Yea, I completed 12 ms in 12×12. Thanks, Julie. I love the accountability of this group.

  12. I finished another one this month – yay! Thanks for all you’ve done for us, Julie, and a very happy new year to you!

  13. When I joined this group last January, I had 2 manuscripts. One that I have tucked away as my “first,” a story that my kids used to love but nothing that I will ever publish and the second is the manuscript that I love and will never give up on. That was January. During the year, I wrote and revised 3 new manuscripts. I started 3 other beginning drafts, as well as creating a character for a series. I also now have a list of ideas that I continue to add to. I didn’t get to 12 but I have a good goal for this year!

  14. Not so well for picture books (I wrote 6), BUT, I did complete a chapter book at an agent’s suggestion, and it has stretched me in so many ways! I did edit a story almost each month, and submitted to 11 agents. Hopefully, I’ll be more productive next year when my kids are out of the nest! Looking forward to 2014!

  15. Another great 12 x 12 year! Thanks Julie. And thanks 12 x 12ers it has been inspiring and fun hanging with you all and sharing and learning with you all. Looking forward to 12 x 12 in 2014.

  16. Thanks, Julie, for 12 X 12. I wrote 3 new picture book manuscripts and revised a lot. And while that disappoints me a bit, I know that I wrote more and learned more through 12 X 12 than I would have on my own. 2014 is a new year! I look forward to being a part of the 12 X 12 community again, and you can bet 12 manuscripts is on my resolution list!

  17. OH YES! With the encouragement and inspiration from 12×12, PiBoIdMo and Sub Six, along with Susanna’s writing contests, I did write 12+ picture book drafts…and revised my head off.:)

One of the best things about all of this is the incredible community that rallies and supports all of the members…I feel blessed to be taking this journey with such an awesome bunch of people!

Happy New Year, Julie…I’m looking forward to the possibilities of 2014!

  18. First, a huge THANK YOU for all that you have done for us in 2013, Julie!

This December was a low point for me, what with watching Canoe fail more and more each day as well as my own health issues including an emergency trip by ambulance to the ER this past Saturdaywhich resulted in my being admitted for surgery, however I did manage to write a new PB draft and revised 2 others..

Here’s my total for the year:

January: I wrote 3 historical PB drafts

February: I revised an existing manuscript along with the manuscript that I submitted to February’s 12 x 12 agent

March: I wrote 2 PB drafts and revised a historical manuscript which I submitted to the March 12 x 12 agent

April: I wrote a PB draft and revised three manuscripts, one of which was historical, and submitted to the April 12 x 12 agent

May: May was very productive. I took part in Paula Yoo’s NaPiBoWriWee and ended up with 12 new manuscripts, four of which have been revised. I also revised one of my older manuscripts which I submitted to the May 12 x 12 agent.

June: June was another very productive month for me. I continued to work on revising the 12 manuscripts that I wrote during Paula Yoo’s NaPiBoWriWee. I have also been revising my chapter book, which may become a MG, as well as my current MG. I revised one of my historical manuscripts and submitted it to the June 12 x 12 agent.

July: This has been one of my busiest writing months. I was a member of WOW NonFicPic and ended up with 7 drafts (3 Historical Fiction; 2 Non Fiction; and 2 Faction) I also wrote 2 new PB drafts, revised my chapter book manuscript which I submitted to agentsalong with submitting one of my older Historical PB manuscripts to the 12 x 12 July agent as well as to the two agents that she recommended

August: Another busy month. I revised and submitted one of my older Historical PB manuscripts to the 12 x 12 August agent; revised my chapter book and my middle grade novel, which is set in 17th century Scotland. My count so far is nine of my manuscripts are still out there …a PB out to one 12×12 agent, a Historical PB out to two 12×12 agents and two others; my chapter book out to three agents and my middle grade out to one agent

September: I wrote a new PB which has been revised, revised and revised yet again. I revised one of my older PB manuscripts and sent it to the September 12 x 12 agent; revised my chapter book and sent it out to agents, revised three other PBs and also sent them out.

I got my 2 rejection form letter… all the others have been wonderful personal rejections with one agent even giving me names of two other agents to submit to

October: I wrote 2 new PB drafts, revised one of my old PB manuscripts and sent it to the October 12 x 12 agent; revised my chapter book and sent it out to agents, revised three other PBs and also sent them out.
I got my first agent request for a full on my chapter book

November: I came up with 70 ideas/drafts for PiBoIdMo, revised and submitted one of my old PB manuscripts to the November12 x 12 agent; revised my chapter book and sent it out to agents, revised three other PBs and sent them out, Revised and sent out my MG to 3 agents. On the 25th I sent out my MG to an agent and an hour later got an email requesting a full, and it’s from an agent who is first on my top 5 list, so my fingers are crossed as he loved the first 3 chapters.

I also received a personal rejection on a July submission that I had sent out however I didn’t consider it a rejection as the agent wanted to see another PB and asked for a list of my other completed manuscripts.

December: I wrote a new PB draft, submitted one of my favorite PB manuscripts to the December 12 x 12 agent, revised and sent out 2 PBs, have been revising one of my chapter books and waiting to hear from both agents who have fulls, one a PB and the other my MG

All told that’s 7 new 12 x 12 picture book drafts (17 if you count the WOW NonFicPic ones. I’m not counting those I wrote for PiBoIdMo), 42 revisions, submitted to all 11 12 x 12 agents along with 27 others. Two referrals to other agents and 3 requests for fulls. All in all not a bad year for this old broad!

    I hope everyone has a great 2014!

  19. Thank you for all you have done for us in 12×12 this year, Julie. I did complete a manuscript in December. Much of my year spent revising and submitting to agents.

  20. I’m ready for revision and submission 2014. I completed a draft in December. Love all of the totals here! I wrote and wrote in 2013.

  21. I am totally happy with 2013. Twelve new drafts, of which seven have real possibilities. Thanks again, Julie!

  22. I not only wrote a manuscript in December, but I wrote a second one this month to catch up for the one I missed in June. That’s 12 in 12 months – not as evenly spaced as last year, but done. Yay. 12×12 is the best.

  23. I was “close but no cigar” to winning but I had a great time this year doing 12×12 and have enjoyed connecting personally to a ton of 12ers. Congratulations on all you’ve accomplished, Julie, and congrats also to everyone who won or met personal goals!

A toast to all of us to close out the old year and to ring in the new year! * ~ * ~ * ~ *

  24. This year I didn’t even come close to “winning” in 12×12. Just one or two drafts and revisions — this year I was much more focused on middle grade fiction and fiction for grown-ups. But the community and support I find in 12×12 made it a winner of a year, anyway. All best to all 12x12ers for the New Year, and thanks and tons of good wishes to you, Julie!

  25. A great year it sounds like for everyone! Thanks for your advice and holding 12 x 12. I am looking forward to 2014 for sure.

  26. After completing three picture book drafts in January, February and March, my writing brain took a left turn. I felt the call to pursue my middle grade novel. I’ve learned not to ignore my instincts, so I plunged into MG waters. But, 12×12 was always there! The monthly posts and steady stream of good news kept me dialed into the community. And in the spirit of 12×12, I strove to write at least one chapter every month. Twelve chapters and 20,000 words later, I’m in a great place with my writing. I have a fresh batch of PB ideas thanks to PiBoIdMo 2013, so I’m hoping to weave PB writing back in for 2014 while I wrap up the first draft of my novel. Thank you, Julie!

  27. OK, 12 new PB drafts for the year! Some are truly awful and will probably never go anywhere, but several are getting me so excited. I did LOTS of revising this year, but must focus on polishing this year so that I have a handful ready for submission since I’m going for GOLD in 2014! And I have several ideas from PiBoIdMo that I can’t wait to pursue, so 2014 will be busy. . . . thanks for the push to being productive Julie!

  28. So happy to be on the journey with you, Julie! You are a shining star and a wonderful human being. (Have you started reading V yet?)

  29. I’m not an official 12×12 person this year (though I am DEFINITELY signing up next year!), so I’m not sure if I’m qualified to enter this contest, but I’m trying anyway. I’ve written two picture book drafts in 2013, one of them this past month. So VERY looking forward to being a part of 12×12 in 2014 (and, of COURSE, would love to win the membership if I’m eligible!). Thanks, Julie!

  30. I wrote a December draft. That makes 4 for the year. I revised and revised and revised. I’m happy with my progress this year.
    Thanks, Julie!

  31. Im so so happy with my stash. i forgot to include a few i wrote in PiBo as well as the wow non fiction and a couple with my little boy so im well and truely over 12. Now to revise! I also have one from the first 12×12 in tip top shape.

  32. I have lost track of how many new drafts (maybe three? and how many revisions (maybe thirty?) but I achieved my main purpose, which was submitting to more agents than ever before, and getting into the habit of submitting.

  33. This challenge has been amazing. It’s gotten me to put pen to page and fingers to computer keyboard, which wouldn’t have happened without it!!!
I almost didn’t make it, but a last minute December draft put me over the top! Woohoo!
I’ve also revised most of the new stories plus a number of goldie oldies as well.
I also got close(er) to finding an agent because of the challenge. With one agent requesting more work, another asking me to submit another story at a later date, and a couple of personal rejections! I’m hoping 2014 will be the year!
Thank you for being our fearless leader and holding us accountable to our success!

  34. Congratulations on your success, Julie. That is the result of your hard works. The best achievement everybody wants to realize.Your spirit to write has driven you to your success than you did before.
    Thanks for sharing.

  35. Thank you Julie for all you do for so many with 12 X12! Congrats on your book pubs!

Where has the year gone?! To writing. To revising. To imagining a dream. To reaching goals.
For me, 12 rough drafts and 12 revisions.

    I look forward to 12 X 12 in 2014!

    Happy musings all!

  36. Thanks for 12 x 12. I did 5 new pb drafts, and 6 revisions.

  37. I didn’t get as many new books written as I had hoped to in 2013, but 12×12 definitely pushed me and inspired me. Thank you, Julie, for starting this fantastic community!

  38. I got my 12th in just in the nick of time. Whew! Thanks again for hosting this. Looking forward to YEAR THREE!

  39. I didn’t even get 7… I think 3-5. 🙁 Hope I do better next, er, THIS year!!!! 😀
