That is all I have to say about July.

I know I threw down the gauntlet in June saying I WOULD write a draft in July.

Well I didn’t. Between two vacations with the kids and preparing for the LA SCBWI conference (plus a few other things), I simply did not have the creative space to write. I’m NOT complaining, because I am thrilled and beyond honored to be on faculty at the conference, and putting my presentations together has been very rewarding creatively.

But I miss writing. I wish I could be one of those people who religiously set a certain time period per day to their writing without fail. I wish I were a morning person. I wish I weren’t so tired at night. I wish I didn’t need so much sleep to function. I wish I’d stop whining. But there it is — just being fully honest and wearing my heart on my sleeve. I will not make any proclamations about August, but you can bet I’ll do my best to get back in the saddle!

Now it’s your turn. Did you or did you not write a new draft and or revise an existing draft in July? Is summer killing you the way it is me? Are you keeping up with your writing this summer?

Quick reminder: Submissions to our July featured agent Karen Grencik will close today at 6:00 p.m. EST/3:00 p.m. PST SHARP! Our August featured agent, Jennifer Mattson will begin accepting submissions tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. EST.

Also, don’t forget that today is the LAST day to get Katie’s Video Idiot Boot Camp course for the now-expired-to-the-general-public early bird rate. To get the deal, click the above link or this one and enter the discount code provided in the membership forum. I’m telling you, it’s a career-changing course. You don’t want to miss it! Meanwhile, read on to find out how to be a winner of Katie’s prizes for this month.

Here is what you need to do to check in for a chance to win a 30 minute one-on-one consultation with Katie Davis or one of two $10 coupons to her store, even if you didn’t complete a draft!

  1. See the Rafflecopter widget at the end of this post that says “30 Minute Consulation with Katie Davis” at the top.
  2. Click on the “Comment on Katie’s Blog Post” button. It will reveal the task, which is to comment on Katie’s July 3rd post. Commenting on Katie’s post is mandatory and gets you one point even if you didn’t complete a draft in July. If you haven’t yet commented, click here to do so. Then you click ENTER on that option in Rafflecopter, which will then open the next two options.
  3. Click on the “Wrote a PB Manuscript” button. This will ask if you completed a PB draft in July. If you did, click ENTER, if you did not, move on to the next step.
  4. Click on the last “Revised a PB Manuscript” button. This will ask if you revised a PB in July. If you did, click ENTER. If not, move on to the next step.
  5. Submit your entry. Rafflecopter will track your points.

You have until midnight EST on Aug 1st to enter your results. I will then have Rafflecopter draw a winner and announce it on the blog on Aug 2nd.

Many, many thanks to Katie for showing how creating videos can make us better picture book writers!

Finally, don’t forget to come back tomorrow to meet August’s featured author.

  1. I wrote two new drafts this month! And I completely hear you on wishing to be a morning person and wishing not to be so tired at night!

  2. I only managed to write the title, concept and outline this month as I visited family and friends 4 planes away for the whole month of July. Got back yesterday, jetlagged but eager for August!

  3. I did the wow non fiction challenge and wrote a new pb

  4. A comment by one of my wonderful critique partners led to my new manuscript about ruminant animals.

  5. I also participated in the NF challenge and wrote a NF story for July.

  6. I completed a draft this month!

  7. You’ll get back to your writing Julie! July/summer vacation was whipping my heinie, but in the last week I finally got inspired to revise a story and then came up with a PB draft. It’s rough, VERY rough, but it’s on paper. 🙂 Sending writing mojo to everyone!

  8. You are doing so many other great things, Julie! Totally frustrating to not be able to do what got you into this in the first place, but things will settle down, the kids will go back to school, and all will be well. Meantime THANK YOU for all that you do.

I am delighted that this month I was actually able to say YES I wrote a draft (horribly rough, but it’s a draft) and revised a PB. Neither of those things are happening much this year, although I’m loving the middle grade and adult writing I’m doing. Anyway, what better month to be able to click yes, yes, yes, than Katie’s month!

    Here’s to all of us!

  9. I am working hard on my PB. I keep getting stuck on one part but I think i am close to done!

  10. Uncle! I was overcome by vacations and other projects as well.

  11. It doesn’t seem possible that today is the last day in July… where did the time go?

This has been one of my busiest writing months, although with the unusually HOT weather we have had, I don’t understand why I wasn’t just a puddle of nothingness.

I was a member of WOW NonFicPic and ended up with 7 drafts (3 Historical Fiction; 2 Non Fiction; and 2 Faction) I also wrote 2 new PB drafts, revised my chapter book manuscript which I am submitting to an agent this morning after I go over it one last time. I submitted one of my older historical PB manuscripts to the 12 x 12 July agent, as well as to the two agents that she recommended

Hope everyone has a great August!

  12. Julie, I think I can say that we (this 12×12 community) are glad to be the beneficiaries of your busy-ness! That’s at least true for me.
Summer has been a particularly tough writing time. A friend and I made a pact that we’d take advantage of the earliest hour possible in our busy lives, and text each other at 5 a.m. each morning. Magnificent plans to get up and write (he’s a nature/wildlife photographer/blogger wanting more time to do his thing). Well….we text at 5:00…but rolling over is so easy.
Nonetheless, I did write a new PB draft (“The Big Big Fig”); I did revise a previous PB (trim-trim-trim) which I submitted to an agent.
And I did love the benefit of everyone’s comments, encouragements, successes and learning-by-trials that are part of this magical mix of kid-litters.
May August bring about more writing delight.

  13. I wrote one new draft this month, and guess what? I’m uber excited about it! First 12×12 manuscript I’ve truly fallen in love with since June 2012… and I think I love it even more than that one.

  14. So validating and refreshing to hear Wonder Woman say Uncle! I’m there with you, Sweetie…

  15. Yep, I revised one and wrote a new pb draft. Going good here!

  16. Julie…we are all in awe of everything you accomplish…it is no mean feat to keep 12×12 up and running so vibrantly…AND being on the RMCSCBWI faculty…AND…(I know there are many other ANDS)!!!!
My little world is teetering on overwhelming…I think I need to seek therapy…I have a pitch on Susanna’s Would You Read It Wednesday…and an upcoming guest post on Donna’s Writerly Wisdom for August 7th…but I did do several pb drafts this month…I think writing is my escape from going through cabinets, closets and years of accumulation. 🙂 And having the opportunity to submit to an agent thru 12×12 really encourages multi-revisions. 🙂

  17. I can’t find the link to Debs post, but I am sure I posted asking if it was the deb who exchanged critiques with me :). I’ve got my ms’s written for the year and more. Doing great now.

  18. I wrote 1.5 drafts! And majorly overhauled an old draft with the help of a new critique partner. Not going to the summer conference this year 🙁 so instead I’m going to write, write, write to take my mind off all the fun I am missing. I AM, however, going to go to the Big Sur Writer’s Workshop in December! I’m crazy excited about that. And what a great way to end a 12×12 year, right?

  19. I hear you, Julie, on the uber busy!

One rough draft for me, but no revisions this month . . . yet! Still a few hours left to this last day of July though 😀

  20. I made one up on the 28th. Never cut it that fine before. I’d love to do the video idiot boot camp but now’s not a good time. Thanks, Julie!

  21. Yes, writing in the summer has been very tough for me. Three bickering boys at home all day is just not conducive to writing! But I did manage to scribble down something today, and I’m counting it gosh darn it! And revising, I’m always revising something, so that’s always easy for me to check off. Julie, hang in there and thanks for all you do!

  22. I’m so glad to be a part of 12X12, I need a deadline, and once again left it to the last possible moment to write a story, 8pm last night whilst sat in a meeting, the story came and I subtly tapped it into my iphone under the table. It will need plenty of revisions, but the basic story is there. It wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t have to sign in today!

  23. Alas, I feel your pain as far as July goes. This is the first month I didn’t make it. I started it, but didn’t get far. With us being gone the first two weeks of the month and then playing catching up, I simply haven’t had any time to breathe.

Congratulations to all those who made it.

  24. I completely forgot about the check in last month. I’m so glad I was able to do this in time this month! I don’t think I’ll get around to editing any manuscripts this month, but hopefully I’ll have time this week! So loving this 12×12 and I’m excited about doing this again next year!

  25. Thought I would have one done this month, too, but vacations did me in! I’m determined to have one done in August!!

  26. Repeating an author isn’t a bad thing, especially if it’s Katie Davis! But you do need to get back to writing, so post your phone number on the 12×12 page, and we’ll take turns giving you a 4 a.m. wake up call. 😉

  27. I entered the contest and now I’m showing no entries for me. I know entered. 🙁

  28. I never got this in my email to check in. But I did revise a picture book and write a new draft. So I’m on track.

  29. Wish I was a morning person too 🙁
Wish I had written something this month 🙁
Wish I managed to do my monthly check in on time lol . . .

  30. Traveling kept me from checking in. I participated in another seven day PB challenge this month and ended up with 8. Revisions and ideas and other projects kept me busy. I’m SOOO happy you presented in LA. I look forward to seeing you at Denver SCBWI.
