Folks, we are HALFWAY through the 2013 12 x 12 picture book writing challenge. HALFWAY!

How did this happen? I swear I woke up yesterday and it was May, and now it’s July? So this check-in seems particularly significant as we assess what we’ve written so far and look forward to the downhill slope to December. Are you on track or do you need to up your game?

I am sorry to report that another month has gone by without a draft from me. I’ll spare you all the excuses and simply put my stake in the ground that I WILL have a new draft in July. My own writing has been taking a back burner to other activities lately, and I miss it. I need to do a better job of making time for writing. So mark my words that I’ll have a new manny for July!

Okay folks. It’s your turn to report. Did you or did you not write a new draft and or revise an existing draft in June?

Quick reminder: Submissions to our June featured agent Erzsi Deak will close today at 6:00 p.m. EST/3:00 p.m. PSTΒ SHARP! Our July featured agent,Β Karen Grencik, will begin accepting submissions tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. EST.

Here is what you need to do to check in for a chance to win a copy of Dinosailors and All Aboard the Dinotrain by Deb Lund, even if you didn’t complete a draft!

  1. See the Rafflecopter widget at the end of this post that says “Dinosailors and All Aboard the Dinotrain by Deb Lund” at the top.
  2. Click on the “Comment on Deb’s Blog Post” button. It will reveal the task, which is to comment on Deb’s June1st post. Commenting on Deb’s post is mandatory and gets you one point even if you didn’t complete a draft in June. If you haven’t yet commented, click here to do so. Then you click ENTER on that option in Rafflecopter, which will then open the next two options.
  3. Click on the “Wrote a PB Manuscript” button. This will ask if you completed a PB draft in June. If you did, click ENTER, if you did not, move on to the next step.
  4. Click on the last “Revised a PB Manuscript” button. This will ask if you revised a PB in June. If you did, click ENTER. If not, move on to the next step.
  5. Submit your entry. Rafflecopter will track your points.

You have until midnight EST on July 1st to enter your results. I will then have Rafflecopter draw a winner and announce it on the blog on July 2nd.

Many, many thanks to Deb Lund for encouraging us to piggyback with our favorite picture books!

Finally, don’t forget to come back tomorrow to meet July’s featured author. I think you’ll like her!

  1. I wrote a couple ms and revised a couple! Happy summer!

  2. I wrote more than one this month and revised one. πŸ™‚ And I managed it despite doing lots of other writing-related stuff AND suffering from severe hayfever. πŸ˜‰

  3. I cannot believe we’re halfway through! Whoa. Amazing! (And thanks again to Julie H, because I never would have written six manuscripts otherwise, nor revised more. THANK YOU.)

  4. For once I did it all: wrote and revised. I was totally inspired by our cherry picking trip in early June.

  5. YaY to all of us. We’re so impressive! I did it all! On to July. I already have my idea. Thank you, thank you!

  6. I can’t believe that June has come and gone… where did the time go? However, June was another very productive month for me. I continued to work on revising the 12 manuscripts that I wrote during Paula Yoo’s NaPiBoWriWee. I have also been revising my chapter book, which may become a MG, as well as my current MG. And I revised one of my historical manuscripts, which had gone out before, and submitted it to the June 12 x 12 agent.

  7. Julie did release your new storybook app – that must be double points or something. πŸ™‚ Summer has been busy.

  8. I wrote and revised multiple ms’s this month. Yay! I never would have gotten so much done had it not been for 12×12!

  9. Wow another month and I wrote 1 new and revised another. Hoping I can keep up the momentum. Thanks Julie!

  10. Pat Haapaniemi

This month flew by! Was only able to revise a couple of manuscripts this month, but my goal, too, is to finish a new one in July and revise another one. Thanks for keeping us motivated, Julie!

  11. I wrote a draft! It’s far from finished. I’m also happy that I remembered d about reporting in. I’ve missed a few months.

  12. I wrote a draft that I like but it needs a lot of work. I’m six for six despite the 14 hour work days I am doing until mid August…just don’t get much sleep. Maybe I’ll write a PB draft about insomnia….lol…

    Donna L Martin

  13. Boy am I proud of myself! Just two hours ago, when I saw this post in my email, I thought, dang, first time I’ve missed writing a draft! But there’s nothing like a threat to get you going! AND I saw a first post for Susanna Hill’s Fourth Of July Secret Mystery Contest….BINGO! Done in two hours! Thanks!

  14. I wrote a new MS this month! Very exciting. Can’t believe we’re half way through! Crazy!

  15. Sharalyn Edgeberg

I am so happy to have heard about your 12 x 12. I have written and revised a ms. every month. I would have never done so without this for motivation. THANKS SO MUCH!

  16. Debra Shumaker

So far 6 for 6! Ever so grateful for one week this month where all three boys were in summer camp for a few hours, or I don’t think I would have ever gotten it done! Thanks again, Julie, for this challenge. I feel like I’m on fire in 2013!!!!

  17. I’ve written and revised three picture books this month, plus I did a lot of reading!

  18. I wrote, revised AND met Julie Hedlund. Now that’s a month!

  19. Melanie Ellsworth

I’m not sure where June went! Must get back on track with writing every day in July. I did revisit a manuscript from a year ago and made revisions I really like (with the help of great critiquers), so that was something positive for June.

  20. I did not write a PB draft. I was so busy revising April and May’s ms to meet my submission deadline coming up in 2 weeks…yikes!

  21. Whew! Done with June’s RD πŸ˜€

  22. I didn’t write a PB draft. Continue to revise others.

  23. Revised, submitted, and rejected PB in June, ON to July.

  24. I wrote one new draft this month thanks to Susanna Hill’s class! Also revised several drafts. I feel good! πŸ™‚ Thanks, Julie and Deb!

  25. I wrote a new draft this month! Woo-hoo! First one since March. I have been so behind. I also revised two manuscripts. A few more in my brain percolating… hoping their burst their way out onto the page in July.

  26. Yes and yes thanks to Susanna’s class. Next month will be a challenge, I’ll have to write a reminder on my forehead :0)

  27. Wow! Can’t believe July is here. June was a tough writing month for me. End of the school year and sports activities left me little time to write. I still managed to complete Easter Bunny Socks, but didn’t have time to revise anything this month. I have my new idea all set to go, so hopefully July will be easier.

  28. I wrote 1 manuscript and revised another πŸ˜‰

  29. I did a draft (very short, early reader PB) but did NOT revise anything….shame on me! Summer has been furiously busy, and yes, the year has flown by like a locomotive. Crazy. Hope things slow down with this heat and I can get back to writing more productively.

  30. Wrote and revised and wrote and revised and wrote and revised some more. 12×12 is definitely the best motivator, Julie! I carry my writing notebook EVERYWHERE…sometimes you get a flash of an idea in the oddest places.:)

  31. Did some – but not as much as I wanted!!! πŸ™

  32. A terrific conference (NJ rocks – NJSCBWI, that is!), wonderful critiques, with some revisions based on those, and even a draft! Woo hoo! Could this be the start of a new trend???

  33. Sorry if I am late with this check in, I have been traveling for the last two days with my kids via 3 planes and lost track which time zone I was in. I revised manuscripts during June and only managed an outline sketch of a new manuscript. But I did manage to get a highly commended in a competition for my April manuscript.

  34. *FACEPALM* Really, I checked in and forgot to enter the contest. My phone’s fault… couldn’t enter through it and I missed this month. It’s okay I entered the contest I wanted to enter. The Create a Female Superhero Challenge, so it’s all good. ^_^

  35. Kenzie Benbrook

Wow can’t believe we are half way through, have not been as productive as I would have liked but still loving 12 x 12 πŸ™‚
Came up with a PB idea in June so that is progress for me as I have been suffering from an “Idea Drought” πŸ™
Yay go me – still need to draft it out though . . .
