12x12 banner largeWhat can I say? What can I say besides CONGRATULATIONS to each and every participant of 12 x 12 in 2012? Because, regardless of whether you wrote one picture book draft or twenty (yes, some people did write that many and more!), you are all winners. You are winners because you WROTE.

YOUR 12 x 12 Winner Badge!

YOUR 12 x 12 Winner Badge!

For those of you who did complete one draft a month and are ending the year with 12 picture book drafts, this WINNER badge, created by Linda Silvestri, is for you. Wear it proudly and come back for more in 2013. Ready to write 12 more? I know I am! Luckily, registration for 2013 opens on January 2.

Here is my outcome for 12 x 12 in 2012:

January — Wrote a PB draft that has become an idea for a chapter book series.

February — Wrote a PB draft using my favorite 2011 PiBoIdMo titled Tea Rex, about a girly, vegetarian T-Rex that wants to throw a tea party for her friends. But she didn’t have any friends because the other dinosaurs were afraid she’d eat them. This book, with the exact same title and very similar press just got sold to Viking Children’s. The only problem is that it’s not my version! Lucky author X who got there first. This is why it is so important to trust your ideas, your intuition and then to get those darn things submitted!!

March — Wrote a sappy, crappy “Mommy Loves Me” kind of story that will never see the light of day.

April — I laid an egg – no draft.

May — I wrote the second in my animal groups series, A SCOOP IS A GROUP OF PELICANS. If all goes according to plan, this will be released as an interactive app in May, 2013.

June/July — No PB drafts, but I did write and publish my Template for Storybook App Proposals.

August —ย Wrote a PB draft from the perspective of the antagonist in one of my other PBs. Might eventually propose it as a “he said/she said” interactive storybook app, as it is also a fractured fairy tale.

September — Wrote a cumulative PB in the “House that Jack Built” style. It needs a lot of work, but I love it.

October — Wrote a PB draft that I am now completely re-writing by flipping the male/female roles.

November — No dice, no draft

December — Wrote a PB draft that is more likely to work as a magazine piece as it is very “quiet.” It’s based on a true story from my own childhood.

So I wrote eight picture book drafts this year, six of which have at least some potential, and one that will most likely be published before the end of 2013. I am ecstatic with this result — far and away better than my performance of ONE new draft in 2011. AND, what’s even more amazing is that I continued to revise existing manuscripts. So my new writing did not get in the way (too much) of revising existing work – a trend that I expect will be more difficult to maintain next year, but that I will certainly aim for.

For this final month of 12 x 12 in 2012, it was an honor to feature author and poet Eileen Spinelli. Whoever wins the monthly handwritten note of encouragement in 2013 is one lucky writer! Many thanks to Eileen for encouraging us in our onward writing journey.

How about you? If you did complete a December draft, let us know in the comments and that will get you another entry toward Eileen’s prize.ย YOU MUST LEAVE YOUR NAME (FIRST AND LAST) IN YOUR COMMENT IF YOU WANT IT TO BE COUNTED AS AN ENTRY.ย Feel free to share not only your status for December but for the year. We can all gaze in wonder at the collective number of picture books we wrote this year. ๐Ÿ˜‰ย You have until midnight EST January 2nd to leave a comment on this post and theย December 1stย postย to be eligible for the drawing. I will draw a winner on January 3rd using Random.org.

Remember — Registration for 12 x 12 in 2013 opens on January 2nd. Our final 2012 winner will be drawn on the 3rd, and our FIRST Featured Author post for 2013 will go live on January 4th. So be sure to come back and join the festivities. In the meantime, Happy New Year to you all!!

  1. I did. Thanks again for doing this. Stacy S. Jensen

  2. I wrote a ms for Dec. I wrote 12 new pb’s this year, thanks to you, Julie!! Can’t wait for 2013’s 12×12!
    ~Tina Cho

  3. I wrote 11 pb ms this year….. Even though I didn’t get to do the complete12, it’s still 11 more than I ever thought I would do. So I am wrapped about that. I could not have done it with out 12×12, so am looking forward to 2013. Since it’s three hours before midnight on New Years Eve, Happy New Year, Julie and to all my fellow 12x12er’s. Diane Tulloch

  4. Thanks for a wonderful 2012, Julie, filled with inspiration and support! I finished my December draft last night with a day to spare. Have just discovered a PB with the same title was published two years ago, but thankfully the stories are very different.

  5. Julie, you’ve kept us inspired and motivated all 2012. Looking forward to writing with you and all my other 12X12ers in 2013. I did complete a story at the beginning of December so I’m in the drawing for Eileen’s encouraging notes. Those would be magical.
    Thank you.
    Happy Writing New Year!
    Mona Pease

  6. I must thank you, Julie, for 12 X 12 and for the wonderful inspiration! With 14 drafts under my belt, January is going to be a month of hard work editing and revising. My plan is to submit, submit, submit, and then submit some more! ๐Ÿ˜‰ 2012 was a year of taking every rejection personally and letting it take me down. Through yours, your posters, and other 12 X 12-ers, I’ve gotten the inspiration and confidence to rejoin the writing community. Thanks everyone for that!!! Here’s to a great year of success for us all!

    ~Beth Gallagher

  7. Finished my December draft in time for a Christmas eve reading; finished 12+ drafts in 2012! Now to figure out how to post the badge to my blog; think that may have to wait until after the ball drops…

Happy New Year, Julie, and another big THANK YOU for all you do!

  8. Loved this challenge and getting to know everyone in this group! I wrote 18 drafts, 3/4 of a chapter book, pitched another two chapter book ideas to an editor (and she loved tem both), started AH Designs where I formatted books and designed bookmarks and other swag for other writers, and my debut pb (FLAP) released in Nov. Busiest year ever. Thank you 12x12ers for all of your nispiration and support! See you in 2013!

  9. Yay! My December draft is done, and it is, by far, my most favorite thing I’ve ever written.

Also, weirdly, my March draft was about Betty Sue Dinosaur, who likes to throw parties but everyone is afraid she’ll eat them. (Though in my story, she does eat them.) My story stinks though. Those early-in-the-year drafts of mine are all pretty awful, but part of the process. (That Feb draft about the broccoli going around the grocery store trying to get people to love broccoli more? Oy.)

Thank you so much for this, Julie! I’m so excited for 2013!

  10. Yes, was able to finish all twelve drafts, some better then others, but roughed out. Thank you Julie and those who contributed. Congradulations Julie on all your accomplishments and support!
    cynthia iannaccone

  11. I got my drafts written, Julie. December’s is my most favorite. So 12 drafts and a happy smiley face here. Hubby hasn’t worked since he fell off the roof in August. (We’ve been living on our savings) So I’m trying to get the money together to join 12 x 12 in 13. *sigh* Just wanted you to know I’m trying. Anyway, thanks Julie. Your support has been a most bodacious thing. *squeezing you tight*

    Robyn Campbell

  12. My December draft is done! So glad I started early this month with a PiBoIdMo idea that was begging to be drafted ASAP.

Oodles of thanks to you Julie, for organizing this amazing challenge. Oodles, poodles and noodles of thanks to all the participants for sharing, cheering and supporting me and each other throughout 2012.

Wishing all the 12 X 12’ers wonderful words, decadent drafts, and inspirational ideas for 2013!

    Cathy Ballou Mealey

  13. I wrote my draft this morning, so that’s it for this month and year. It’s been a stressful caregiving year for me (Alzheimer’s and recently cancer), so if there is a 12×12 community network set up apart from FaceBook, please let me know. I don’t know if I should even attempt this in 2013 on my own. Even so, I’ve written more drafts than I ever would have without 12×12. Thanks, Julie. ๐Ÿ™‚
    Happy New Year, everyone!

  14. December draft – done. That makes 12 stories in 12 months. Head above water, but not an over-achiever! I LOVED 12×12! Thanks!

    Genevieve Petrillo

  15. Yes, I did…a simple retelling of the Christmas story. Thanks for making 12×12 a success this year. Looking forward to 2013!
    Jarm Del Boccio

  16. Got my 12 done for the year! Played catch-up a couple of months, but December draft completed two days ago….”Piney Bayou Twelve Days of Christmas.” Some are better than others, some need work, one or two have been revised some throughout year. Gonna make 2013 the YEAR OF REVISISUBMISSIONES and I’m sure that many of these drafts will get a lot of work. Who knows what they will look like next December!
Thanks again Julie…how can we say it enough? You have impacted so many of us in such a wonderful way.
    Looking forward to 12 x 12 in 2013. – Damon Dean

  17. Yeah! wrote a draft for December! And am planning to work on it this coming month because it has real potential. In 2013 I’m going to concentrate on submitting six of my best stories, so I prolly won’t make it to 12X12. But I learned a lot and appreciate the kick in the butt!

  18. Nope, not even close. But I did write some articles about Connective Tissue. ๐Ÿ™‚

  19. I did 4, but couldn’t get another done in time. Too busy ๐Ÿ™

  20. Woo-hoo, dogs, cats, bunnies, dragons, mice, tea parties, lighthouses, Christmas pageants, and more for a total of 16! THANK YOU 12×12 and Julie. I did not do a party, not because I didn’t want to…I had bought some streamers, party hats, etc. and had planned it for the 15th which was the day after the Newtown tragedy-so probably like many of you – the party didn’t happen. I just want to say that 12×12 has touched my heart and made a difference in my life, my outlook, and my future. Friends, you have given of yourselves and no greater gift could be given. My first book (which WILL happen) will be dedicated to all of you! God keep you and bless your endeavors!. Laura Miller

  21. I completed my draft for December, and have 14 drafts to show for the year (not counting various bits and pieces that I wrote for other things.) THANK YOU, Julie, for guiding our group through this. I’d never have even thought to try to write so many drafts if it weren’t for this group. I’ve just delved into my July draft, with plans to revise it and see where it takes me.

I plan to sign up for 12×12 in 2013 at the basic bronze level. Here’s to the new year!

    Beth Stilborn

  22. I completed my November and December draft in the last few days. I’m happy to announce I have finished the challenge with twelve drafts! Congratulations to all the participants and thank you Julie for hosting this challenge. I have twelve more drafts in my repertoire than when I started this year, and that is quite a treasure.

    Christin Alemshah

  23. You’ve had a truly remarkable year Julie and brought us all along with you! Sign of a great leader. I did not complete a draft this month and I hoped to over the holidays. But, I have five good drafts, one I have in publisher’s inboxes and a second ready to send. I have a lot of starts on stories, but got stuck. Trying to maintain a balance between my writing and my very important spiritual/meditative life. Thank you so much for all that you’ve done! I know you have a great year ahead of you with the conference and your new app! Have a very Happy New Year!

  24. What an amazing year of accomplishment for you, Julie! I feel blessed to have connected with you and 12×12…you’ve been a major contributing factor in the joy I’ve felt in 2012.

Yes, I did complete 12 drafts…better yet, 2 of them are just about ready to be submitted. I really appreciate your month by month list in this post…February is an especially important one because it highlights the importance of getting one’s work out there in a timely fashion. So many of us are hesitant…is it good enough, who to submit to, how to submit, other things getting in the way.

I’m grateful for your leadership, inspiration and encouragement, Julie…and I’m surely looking forward to 12×12 in 2013! Was there a signup email already to people who were part of 12×12 in 2012? I don’t think I have gotten anything like that yet.

Happy New Year to you and your family, Julie!

  25. You know, I always forget to leave my name!
Yes, I did complete 12 pb drafts in 12×12.:)
    Vivian Kirkfield

  26. I did complete a December draft. For the year, I have 11. I missed November and never got caught up. But, I write this comment without even a tiny bit of disappointment. I have 2 out on submission, and several others in the revision process that I still love. Of course, I have duds, too!! But that’s part of the process.

Many, many thanks to you, Julie!!!
    Here’s to a happy and healthy 2013!

    Penny Klostermann

  27. Done! I think it’s super you’ve got a series going. Thanks for everxthing, Julie and Happy New Year!

  28. You laid an egg in April. I like that. Looking forward to reading Sept. and Dec. stories some day.
    Happy New Year!

  29. Good for you, Julie! I finished my 12th PB just a day or two after Christmas, and I loved the encouragement and guidance I found here all year long. 2012 was WAY more productive than 2011 (considering I didn’t quite get around to *any* PB drafts in 2011!) Best in 2013-and thanks for everything!

  30. I did complete a December draft and looking forward to working on it some more in 2013. Thank you for organising the whole event and well done you too for all you have achieved this year Julie! Happy New Year everyone!

  31. Finished mine earlier in the month and have loved doing this every month in 2012! thanks to 12 x 12, I have 12 rough drafts of picture book manuscripts (12 more than I would have had if I hadn’t been doing 12 x 12 in 2012!)

  32. Hi Julie! First of all, thank you so much for hosting this. It was a great motivator for Chris and I. ๐Ÿ™‚ We were excited that we completed 12 picture books in 12 months!

Our final picture book that we published on our audio podcast was called Ohwhatfunitis. The link is here: http://www.nightlightstories.net/2012/12/episode-53-ohwhatfunitis.html

  33. My December draft is done. yay! Happy New Year Julie & everyone ๐Ÿ™‚

  34. Julie Rowan-Zoch

Just one for December, which brings my total to 45 mss for the year. Most are still rough drafts, but I hope to have one dummy for ready for submission by the end of January.

Thanks to Julie and all the 12×12 support for a successful 2012 – I look forward to ‘seeing’ you all in 2013!

  35. I did it with about 6 of my ms’s worth really cleaning up. i have used succesfuly in kindergarten and my show. looking forward to doing it again. thanks julie

  36. Twelve new rough drafts sewn in 2012. Thank you, Julie, for putting this challenge in front of us. Would I have written without it, absolutely. Would I have achieved one new rough draft per month? Probably not. Would I have met so many wonder creatives which include my amazing critique group The Caring Critiquers? Nope. For all of this and all of you, I am forever grateful!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  37. Congrats on a very productive year, Julie! I made it: 12 new manuscripts… and that’s twelve better than last year. Thanks so much for an amazing year. Looking forward to the next!

  38. Hi Julie, i wrote many more than 12 ms, but I owe it to 12×12. I was stretched! My poetry try was due to the poets who posted beautiful, funny, crazy poems. I want to thank everyone, because their contributions ( be they comments, interviews, illustrations, or blog posts) enriched my life and helped me grow. And that is a lovely thing. ๐Ÿ™‚ Brenda A. Harris

  39. I finished my December draft a couple of days ago, so I’m 12 for 12! And I also managed to get a couple revised somewhere in there. All in all, I’m very pleased with 2012 and I hope you are too, Julie. Thank you so much for all you have done for us this year and here’s to GOOD NEWS in 2013.

  40. Lots of great work represented here, Julie – thanks for all you do re. your own work and encouraging others! Wishing you a happy, creative 2013! :0)

  41. Hi Julie, Thanks for everything. You really have had an amazing writing year. Congrats to all your accomplishments. I only wrote five new drafts, but I am really excited since my April draft is lending itself into a character-driven pb series.

  42. I wrote a brief synopsis of a possibly wordless picture book today, Jan. 1. That will have to count as my Dec. draft. I wrote very few new drafts this year, but elaborated on a number of simmering ideas I have had. And I have devoted time and energy to two projects that I am heavily invested in–the books I really want to write. I found a number of the posts by the experts on this blog to be particularly helpful for these projects.

One thing I have had to consider is how much time to invest in reading posts, blogs, comments, Facebook and how much to post of the same, versus doing my “work.” I am working towards balance between participating in communities and getting caught up in the hustle to “market” myself. What I am learning is that the best marketing is about being generous with yourself and your experience (prime example, what you did here in the 12 x 12 community, Julie), participating in communities that support your efforts, and becoming related to other, like-minded creatives.

Congratulations to all who participated this year and best of luck in 2013. Thanks, Julie, for all the hard work you’ve done to create the 12 x 12 community.

    Sallie Wolf

  43. I did ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks so much for a great, motivating year! I love your break down, you did so well considering you had the big task of running 12 x 12 and developing your app, so well done!

  44. I have several titles/ideas, a handful of rough drafts and possibly a polished manuscript I can start submitting, but my biggest success has been completing a third book for my Ever So series with Maverick. I’d already finished one for publication this year, but the constant fiddling about with ideas for 12 x 12 triggered another story almost without me realising what I was doing – thank you! I’m about to sign up for 2013 with great hopes for similar inspiration!

  45. Whoo-hoo! Yes, I did it. December was actually more creative than I expected, given the other things that needed my time. I almost forgot to “check-in” though. Thank goodness you gave us the wiggle room!
I’m looking forward to a great writing year in 2013.

    Wendy Greenley

  46. Finis! Of course it’s just the beginning, but so excited to have a pile (virtual) of 12 ms to work with–and work with…Thanks to Julie and everyone who participated for sharing expertise, support and good cheer. Would not have done it otherwise, that’s for sure!

    Lisa Rogers

  47. Elizabeth McBride

Many thanks to you Julie, and to the many guests who contributed to a successful 12×12 in 12 year that has flown by! I am so proud to say I did it! Thank you for organizing it all and for the great plans for 12×12 in 2013! I am a happy GOLD member already!
