The dog days of summer are upon us. Has the heat improved or impeded your writing? Now is the time to let us know, dear 12 x 12 in 2012 participants, to check in and let us know if you completed a picture book draft in July.

Once again I did not complete a draft, BUT I did comprehensive research for three new titles in my animal groups series. I plan to write two of them in August to make up for lost time. I also published my first product – a Template for Storybook App Proposals – but I know that doesn’t count as a PB draft. 🙁

Many thanks to our July featured author – Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen. If you missed her comprehensive July 1 post about finding solutions to PB problems, go read it without delay!  If you left a comment on that post, you are automatically entered to win a FREE critique from Sudipta, regardless of whether you completed a PB draft this month. Don’t lose your chance to win – make sure you comment on that post!!

If you did complete a draft in July, let us know in the comments and that will get you another entry. YOU MUST LEAVE YOUR NAME (FIRST AND LAST) IN YOUR COMMENT IF YOU WANT IT TO BE COUNTED AS AN ENTRY.   You have until midnight EST August 1st to leave a comment on this post and/or the July 1st post to be eligible for the drawing.

Don’t forget to come back tomorrow to meet our August author!!

  1. Yes, I wrote a new ms for July, and I’d love to win a critique from Sudipta! Julie, the app template IS a huge project itself, let alone writing a pb story. I’d say it should count for your July writing 🙂

  2. I finished three days ago. Yay! I would love the opportunity to win a crit from Sudipta. Thanks for this, Julia, and for the great e-book. I hope to have an app proposal together soon.

    Rebecca Colby

  3. I finished my draft, polished it and submitted it to a competition! I didn’t win… but I more than made July 🙂

  4. Done! But still needs a bit of revision. Julie, congrats on publishing your first product.

    Rena Traxel (Boudreau)

  5. yes i did my july. great prizes and inspiration as always! Kelly McDonald ie kelly artist illustrator

  6. Chris and I wrote a July PB draft. We published it in our podcast.

We’ve had a few surprises thrown at us this summer, so we are finding it a little more challenging to write. However, we found some spare time. We had fun writing this one together.

  7. I have Loved the STorybook App template! I have had one very sick bubba this month, but, still managed to complete July’s draft….and I have been working hard to polish it too. Bring on August!
    Nicky Johnston

  8. Grateful to have finished my July draft early in the month! Thanks so much Julie and congrats on your template!
    Elizabeth Stevens Omlor

  9. I rocked out my July draft at the beginning of the month. Ready for August! Congrats on your template!
    -Alison Hertz

  10. July draft – done and done. The idea came after an hour at the park watching 3 and 4 year olds at soccer camp. OMG. I agree with Tina – the app template counts! Just sayin’. If I wrote it, I’d count it!

    Genevieve Petrillo

  11. Julie, once again I feel like huge, huge things are happening for you! Your goal with 12×12 was to have 12 manuscripts, but I think you’ll have more than the equivalent of that in products, work, and inroads.

I’ve got about 3/4 of a July manuscript, though I actually worked on it a bit more this morning and am keeping it open on my computer all day, adding to it when I can. So let’s say it’ll be 98% done by the end of the day.

    Julie Falatko

  12. I wrote a draft in July! I didn’t think I would get to it, but it happened! Congrats on your template Julie!
    -Eric VanRaepenbusch

  13. I have one for July finished and I managed to have a pb idea ready for next month. I wish you much success with your template!

    Jennifer Young

  14. I did finish a draft in July, though I need to re-revise it. 🙂 LOVE 12 X 12!

  15. July draft complete. I am very happy with my 12 X 12 experience. I now have seven new stories plus the wonderful bonus of a great community of fellow PB writers. Who could ask for more.

  16. I am happy to say I did not finish a PB draft because I got an ongoing freelance gig with BirdBrain Science writing nonfiction articles. 12 x 12 made this gig possible so THANK YOU! I am hoping to have more time once the kids are back in school to do both.

  17. I’m pumped, because even though there’s nothing special for completing a draft this month, I ACTUALLY DID IT (inside of one month). Woo hoo!

  18. You rock, Julie, for doing all that you do!

Despite the fact that most of my focus this month has been on my middle grade novel, I did pull a rabbit out of a hat, er, I did write a picture book draft, so I’m 7 for 7, which is amazing to me. Thanks, Julie!

    Beth Stilborn

  19. Yes, I have a pb draft I was actually happy with – until I cleaned out a drawer and found a handmade book our daughters made for father’s day years ago – I think theirs was better than mine. *Sigh* Can we say rewrite? Laura Anne Miller P.S. – yes, it has been more difficult to write this month – and the only reason I forced myself…..12×12. Thank you, Julie and fellow 12x12ers. There is something about accountability. Anyone want to take on weight-loss? Would we take a picture of the bathroom scale and send it in?…….

  20. Congrads to everyone and even those who did not complete one. Yippee for me!!!!!! I have one. And it’s really good. Needs work, but the basics are there. Loved Sudipta’s interview. Cannot wait for August’s. I also have this great idea for two picture drafts I want to write for August. Congrads on the template Julie. It counts. You have one. You rock woman!!

    Robyn Campbell

  21. What an amazing month it has been!

Thank you, Sudipta, for such an amazing post! You always provide such wonderful insight.

I completed my July draft early on. You never know when you will receive inspiration. But for me, it came while slicing brussels sprouts for dinner one night. Bam! That draft was done in an hour. Its already received critique from my writers group and I am working on some revisions. 🙂

I also already have an idea for my August manuscript which came to me this past weekend. Hope to pound the initial draft out before the end of the week.

Go 12x12ers! 5 more to go!

    Happy Writing,
    Marcie Colleen

  22. Congrats again on your first great product, Julie!

Yep, I have managed a July draft!

    Joanna Marple

  23. I think your storybook app proposal is worth at least two PBs in my book!!
Yes! I finished my July story…a fresh retelling of the Biblical account of the beloved Dorcas, who was raised to life, much to the delight of her friends. I’m still mulling over the title…
    Jarm Del Boccio

  24. Arg – I did not complete a drafty draft. But I sold my house! That has to count for something – a story ending…and a new beginning for August. Congrats to all. Wheee!

  25. I have a draft for July. Still needs more work. Patricia Tilton.

  26. I did finish a draft this month. Congrats on your first product!
    Darshana Khiani

  27. Patricia Nozell

I finished my draft early this month, to leave time to revise two other manuscripts. Am now setting my sights on August draft – I think I promised Two Orange Pups to memorialize the encounter we had with a Bear earlier this month. Something about Two Orange Pups and the Big Bad Bear…maybe set during the Dog Days of Summer…

Congratulations, Julie, on publication of your App template. I am in awe of all that you accomplish & how much you have given of yourself to our 12×12 family.

    Patricia Nozell

  28. Completed july’s draft! Congratulations on the template Julie!
    Cynthia Iannaccone

  29. I did a July draft. It’s absolutely terrible. My worst so far this year, but… it has a beginning, middle, and end. So it counts.

    Nessa Morris

  30. Coming under the wire, I have done a very rough draft for my July PB. I’m hoping after the kiddies return to school in mid August my life will settle down some and my writing schedule will improve. And yes, I agree with the other ladies…I would LOVE to win the critique from Sudipta!

    Donna L Martin

  31. Margaret Greanias

I finished a manuscript in July. Now, thinking about what I can write for August! You’ve accomplished more than enough to count for July! I’m looking forward to checking out the template!

    Margaret Greanias

  32. I felt smug this month as I whipped out the beginning of a story earlier in the month. I’m usually scrambling at the very end. Then I saw your post, Julie, and realized I had a little more scrambling to do here at the end again. Sigh… But it’s done! Thanks for these nudges.

  33. I have 12 drafts done (YAY!) unfortunately, they need lots of work (and I mean lots of work…lol)!!!

  34. In by the hair on my chinny chin chin! Inspiration struck this morning as I discovered the dog devouring the corner of the house. Sigh. It sounds like you have had a very productive month, Julie!

    Thank you,
    Heather Newman

  35. I’m finding the summer a difficult time to write…not so much the heat but the humidity (a.k.a. sweaty kids hanging around). I did finish a July draft, but I don’t love it. Sigh… on to August.

  36. What happened to July? I’m getting lots of ideas and not writing much. I am painting and swimming. Great combination.

    Sallie Wolf

  37. Just finished my July draft. Not sure what to make of it yet but it is done.
I’m going to check out that template, Julie. Good for you!!
    Dana Carey

  38. Ok…so the sad thing is that July is the first picture book draft l have been able to complete. The good news is well, I have draft!

  39. I did complete a draft for July, but summer has definitely slowed things down. Actually, I think just hitting that mid-point in the year was the challenge. I went with stronger PiBoIdMo ideas for the first half of the year, so this one was more work than others. Congratulations to everyone who’s still ‘in it to win it’!

  40. I wrote a July Draft and I remembered to check in — woo hoo!

  41. YeeeHaw! Dispite all the madness, I got my July draft done… TODAY!
And now I’m proud of myself for checking in. Bravo for meeee!

    Bethany Telles

  42. July was tough and the draft is rough, but it’s complete. Thanks for keeping me on track!

    Wendy Greenley

  43. You had a busy month, Julie. Thanks for the PB APP Template! I just downloaded it. Now I need to look at it. Looking forward to it. And yes, I wrote my July draft. But my creative juices are going dry. Busyness can cause that.

  44. Did a lot of writing. Did a lot of crossing out, crumpling up of papers, tossing them into the recycle bin. Sharpened pencil and wrote some more. More crossing out. More crumpling and tossing. Sharpened pencil to a nub. Have something: words on a page. It’s very rough and – with all the holes from erasing – very drafty. Not sure I’d go so far as to call it a story….

  45. Whoof! Just got a very muddy PB draft in under the wire. It ain’t pretty, but it’s done. I did, however, manage several rounds of revisions this month on an earlier 12×12 story–thanks to my crit group. And, I started the very beginning stages of my first potential MG project. Thanks again Julie.
    Tim McCanna

  46. It was a close call, but I finally managed to come up with a July picture book draft. At one point I thought I had run dry of new ideas.
I love scrolling down and recognising everyone’s names and faces now in the comments, it feels like such a big community to be part of!
A a FREE critique from Sudipta sounds like a great prize.

  47. July has not been a productive month for me but I think I have what one would call a draft. It has holes, big holes, to fill in, but the gist of the story is there .. beginning, middle needing work, end needing work. Is that a draft?
Just in case it is … I am getting my name in on time.
    Lynn A. Davidson

  48. My draft is done. It’s messy and may never see the light of day, but it’s done. 🙂

  49. Done, but messy. I have 4 stories finished, 2 almost revised, and a very rough draft about children and prayer, On to August.

  50. Whew! Just finished. But it’s not nearly as good as that storybook app YOU finished in July. Very impressive, Julie!

  51. Finished my July draft. Thanks again for the inspiration and deadline. And Julie, love your new photo!

    Lisa Rogers

  52. My jewel of a rough draft for July is safely tucked away for now. Will return to polish another day.
But for tonight, I shout off the light. Sleep well, my dear fellow creatives!

  53. Julie…I’m with Tina on thinking that your storybook app (and all you do for 12×12) gives you a pass for this month (and any other)! I did finish a pb draft for July…I’ll be pitching it in September on Susanna’s “Would You Read It?”…actually a sequel to “The Tomato Turner”. 🙂 I would LOVE to win a critique from Sudipta…after reading her guest post, I am totally impressed with the scope of her knowledge about picture books!
    Vivian Kirkfield

  54. I second your Bravo…Bravo for you, Bethany!

  55. Kirsten…how super-cool is that! Good for you. 🙂

  56. I did it! Ten minutes to spare 🙂 I’m excited because I tried something new. I wrote my first second-book-in-a-series. I wasn’t sure I was going to like it, and I wasn’t sure how to execute my ideas, but I have a very workable first draft complete. Yay! Thank you all for the continued support, Sudipta for your inspiration, and Julie for everything! I would love to win a critique!
    Many thanks,
    Beth Thaler
P.S. – Julie, your template counts as 2 picture books at least. 🙂

  57. A rather chilly July here in Seattle, but I did manage to complete a draft (started in February, and thrown over for a faster-written idea that month!) that I’m already imagining how to improve with a thorough first edit! Love the 12 x12, would love to win Sudipta’s critique – and sending love to all my fellow 12 x12ers for an inspirational summer!

    🙂 Melissa Kelley

  58. Elizabeth McBride

    Elizabeth McBride

Yay for Beth Thaler with her second book in a series! I tried that too for this month and had such a good time with it that I have already begun working on the third for next month! I would love to have a critique from Sudipta; what a great prize. Thanks again for all the hard work and good advice, Julie.

    Elizabeth McBride

  59. Well, it ain’t pretty yet, but it exists! Oddly enough, June AND July were both primarily finished on airplanes!
    Carter Higgins

  60. Whew! Back to just-in-time production for me. Rough draft, but it’s done. Inspired by summer fun!

    Peggy J. Sheridan

  61. Shannon Abercrombie

Complete and proud of it! Plus its been revised revised twice! Now its time to let it sit for a bit.

    Shannon Abercrombie

  62. Yes, I completed mine! We’ve had cold indoor writing weather on this side of the world. 🙂

  63. Done diddley did it!
    Karen Kallis Cheesman

  64. Kathleen Cornell Berman

It has been a wonderful rainy day that has helped me focus and write an ending to my July draft. Done! Congratulations Julie on completing your story app. So nice of you to share with us. I am truly inspired after reading the details. So much for me to learn.

    Kathy Cornell Berman

  65. Penny Klostermann

I completed the roughest, draftiest first draft I’ve ever created. It’s an idea I have been rolling around in my head since PiBoIdMo, though, so I’m excited to have it drafted out.

Big congrats on your template, Julie! What a MAJOR accomplishment!

  66. Penny Klostermann

Forgot my name when I reported my draft complete.
    Penny Klostermann

  67. Okay – let me check my calendar: – It’s August 2. Nope Didn’t make it. But that’s okay – No July PB Draft (lost several ideas by not writing them down immediately) It’s all great though. I’m in the slide into my birthday and inner regrouping takes precedence. I’m really excited to keep going…..Lulls are for resting.
    Melissa Mead

  68. Well…August 1st flew by. Did get the PB drafts, in fact two of them, but failed to make the post. Satisfied anyway, and excited about the ideas in both of them. – Damon Dean

  69. Sorry! I missed this… I was camping with 20 skunks. 😉 I DID write a draft though… *sigh* Erik Weibel

  70. I keep missing the end of the month check-ins! I have been completing my manuscripts early, so when the month ends, I’m already looking towards my next picture book and never realize how fast the time has come upon me! Yes, I completed this month’s picture book manuscript. I was reading that others have been submitting theirs to competitions, and I think I might start looking into doing the same myself.

  71. I totally missed this, but wanted to say I finished my draft for July. Thanks to a homework assignment, I illustrated 13 pages of it. 🙂

  72. I missed this too but I’m home now and I’ve done July’s and August’s. Probably rubbish but the heat is off now. Catherine Johnson. So nice to be back!
