12 x 12 new banner

Folks, this is going to be a short and sweet intro because I honestlly have no idea what happened to the month of May. Seriously. What happened to it? How can we be entering our sixth month of 12 x 12 already?

It’s probably obvious by that opener that I did not get a draft completed in May. I’m feeling anxious about it and itching to write. So you heard it here first – I WILL write a draft and revise one in June!! So there!

Quick reminder: Submissions to our May featured agent Elizabeth Harding will close today at 6:00 p.m. EST/3:00 p.m. PST SHARP! Our June featured agent, Erzsi Deak, will begin accepting submissions tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. EST.

Okay folks. It’s your turn to report. Did you or did you not write a new draft and or revise an existing draft in May?

Here is what you need to do to check in for a chance to win a PB critique from Jean Reidy, even if you didn’t complete a draft!

  1. See the Rafflecopter widget at the end of this post that says “A Picture Book Critique from Jean Reidy” at the top.
  2. Click on the “Comment on Jean’s Blog Post” button. It will reveal the task, which is to comment on Jean’s May 1st post. Commenting on Jean’s post is mandatory and gets you one point even if you didn’t complete a draft in May. If you haven’t yet commented, click here to do so. Then you click ENTER on that option in Rafflecopter, which will then open the next two options.
  3. Click on the “Wrote a PB Manuscript” button. This will ask if you completed a PB draft in May. If you did, click ENTER, if you did not, move on to the next step.
  4. Click on the last “Revised a PB Manuscript” button. This will ask if you revised a PB in May. If you did, click ENTER. If not, move on to the next step.
  5. Submit your entry. Rafflecopter will track your points.

You have until midnight EST on June 1st to enter your results. I will then have Rafflecopter draw a winner and announce it on the blog on June 2nd.

Many, many thanks to Jean Reidy for inspiring us to create picture books with power!

Finally, don’t forget to come back tomorrow to meet June’s featured author. It’s another winner!

  1. Oh my, it felt good to check the box marked “wrote a PB manuscript in May” — the last time I could check that box was February! Writing it even gave me some extra insight into the new website I’m planning! Thanks for the continued inspiration — Julie and the entire group!

  2. This has been productive month for me. Lots of exciting news from fellow writers!

  3. Sharalyn Edgeberg

Thanks for your 12 x 12. I have been writing every month & learning a lot.

  4. I somehow missed the Jean Reidy post, and I am grateful for the check-in because now I found it. I really like her 12 reasons to keep 12 picture books percolating. It was perfect for me.

  5. Another month without a completed manuscript. Have revised a few and ideas are bubbling over. Just can’t seem to complete a draft. Either stuck in the middle, don’t like the end, of find the piece boring. Won’t give up though.

  6. Just typed “The End” on May’s story this morning. May is very busy for us and we spent a few days in Florida, so I wasn’t sure how it would go. Managed to finish this month’s story and make some edits to last month’s story, so I’m pleased.

Keep up the great work everyone. rlkurstedt, you can do it. Try going back to one of the ideas you started at the beginning of the year and see if something comes to you. Good luck!

  7. Thanks to NaPiBoWriWee I can say yes seven times on the draft. Ready for June … I think.

  8. Got the general idea down, wrote out most of the manuscript. I’m calling it good enough. ; )

  9. My crit group keeps me motivate! Bring it on, June.

  10. Really worked on revising a manuscript I wrote some time ago. And, I outlined the format for a new manuscript but really can’t say it’s a completed draft.

  11. Revised but no draft. But, I’m happy because revision is a big goal for me this year :β€’)
    Thanks, Julie.

Doing good so farβ€”I’ve hit every month. But the kids will be home for good next Friday, so June, July and August scare me – can’t imagine completing any drafts, but I’m pretty good at revising in those stolen moments. . . .so I know I’ll be able to do at least that. This, by far, has been my most productive year and a huge reason is because of PiBoIdMo last November and 12×12. Thanks Tara and Julie!

  13. It’s funny seeing these posts and panicking and then remembering you have done it. Phew!

  14. May was very productive. I took part in Paula Yoo’s NaPiBoWriWee and ended up with 12 new manuscripts, four of which have been revised. I also revised one of my older manuscripts which I submitted to the May 12 x 12 agent.

  15. I only JUST completed a May draft — my first draft all year. I’ve been busy revising my stories from last year, but it feels great to get back to writing something new. Yay 12×12!

    • Carrie, you’ve been so busy with April March Madness AND your craft book review of How To Write Picture Books I am amazed you have had time to write anything else…congrats!

  16. This has been the month that I actually submitted a revised PB. and worked on several more ideas The inspiration is great and the possible chance to get a critique is worth the effort.

  17. Yay, completed a May draft just in time! After a very unproductive March and April, it’s good to check that box.

  18. I am pleased to say this for the first time that I did write a whole new manuscript and also revised one enough to send in. Only a few revisions left on the new one too. This is my first check in so I’m proud of myself. πŸ™‚

  19. Rough draft, revision, and blog comment on Jean’s awesome May post completed! πŸ˜€

  20. OH my Oh my — it’s time to start on June.

  21. I wrote 7 for NaPiBoWriWee!! Which was amazing and some days tough. I need to restock my ideas though, I think I’m fresh out. June could be interesting. πŸ˜€ Loving 12×12, what a lot of great people and great info, not to mention inspiration to BIC and write. Thanks!

  22. Productive crazy month – still baffled it’s May 31st today!

    • Oops. Revised 3, wrote 2 new drafts, drew a TON!, slapped together a portfolio and went on an interview to illustrate kid-lit books, and got invited to do it (YAY!) and critiqued a ton for my groups (that should be a piece of the pie too – next year!)

  23. Kathleen Cornell Berman

Very good month. I participated in Paula Yoo’s NaPiBoWrWee and wrote 6 drafts and revised other manuscripts. Looking forward to June and the NJSCBWI conference.

  24. Completed it all, by the seat of my pants. Thanks, Julie!!

  25. I revised a lot! I have one shiny draft almost ready to go out on submission. I’m very excited.

  26. This month did speed by and I only completed a draft manuscript by the skin of my teeth. How rough can it be – mine is sooo rough. But the ms I revised makes me feel good.

  27. A very productive month, but alas, with summer coming, my productivity may drop off. Hopefully not though. Good luck to all!

    • Summer business is making me a little anxious too, Sylvia. May was tough…just couldn’t seem to find the time to dedicate to the craft. I hope to look for and find inspiration in the season.

  28. Romelle Broas

May was tough! There were days that I just stared at my blank paper. Jotted ideas, but could not get it started. My journal of ideas could not get me out of my funk. But just last week, I wrote 2 stories and revised one. Don’t know how that came to be but
    it’s done.

  29. All I can say is THANK YOU, JULIE! If not for 12×12, I know I would NOT be writing with this regularity. I’ve found a process that works really well for me each month…1st week I write the draft, 2nd week I polish it up, 3rd week I submit it to my online AND local critique groups, 4th week I incorporate the suggestions, polish and submit. During in-between moments, I revise older manuscripts or brainstorm new ideas.

I can’t believe the 2013 Asian Festival of Children’s Content is behind me…an absolutely fantastic experience…starting with my FIRST-EVER international flight…meeting incredible content creators from around the world…attending dozens of mind-blowing sessions that hopefully will help me become a better writer…connecting with people who I hope will remain friends for life. I will definitely be going to the Rocky Mountain SCBWI Letters and Lines conference in September…now I truly see how valuable these conferences are!!!!

    • Viv, my goal is to be that disciplined…week by week writing revising reviewing and re-writing. Then submitting. You’re a great model.
And I imagine that the Festival was wonderful!

      • Oh my gosh! I hope I can inspire others…as I’ve been inspired by so many in this incredible kid lit community. πŸ™‚ Before I started this ‘routine’, I was so disorganized and was hard-pressed to keep track of what I was working on and what I should submit…this just makes it simpler. πŸ™‚
The Festival was beyond wonderful. πŸ™‚ I had a great time and learned so much and met fantastic people!

  30. Whoa…so many successful NaPiBoWrWee people! I should have given it a try.
Anyway, wrote my PB draft this week (last minute) and earlier this month revised (and submitted) another. I was glad to get at least that done. Thanks Julie and 12×12 community for inspiration. Meanwhile, those checklists that Jean Reidy gave us are god-sent! SO helpful. Thanks Jean again.

  31. Wrote, revised, and submitted a handful of mss too! And commented on Jean’s post, of course. πŸ˜‰ My work here is done…uh…you mean there are 7 more months to go??

  32. Wrote two new manuscripts. Scrapped one. Revised two others and submitted! My most productive month yet!!!

  33. Kenzie Benbrook

Better late than never to check in, although alas nothing very exciting to report πŸ™ Still enjoying all the information and sharing of 12 x 12 though πŸ™‚ and reading through here makes me feel a little better as it sounds like I was not the only one that found May difficult !
