Before the moon sets on October, I want to share one of the charming picture books written by our October 12 x 12 in 2012 featured author, Dianne de las Casas, who is ALSO the founder of Picture Book Month – starting in just a few days! It was a difficult to pick one with so many great choices, but I settled on DINOSAUR MARDI GRAS because my son loves it so much and the uber-talented Carter Higgins did the book trailer.
Pelican Publishing, November, 2011
Suitable for: Ages 3+
Themes/Topics: Dinosaurs, Parades, Music, New Orleans, Mardi Gras
Opening/Synopsis: From Amazon Book Page: “Get ready to stomp and chomp to that mambo beat! When carnival time rolls into New Orleans, these hip dinosaurs want to boogie on down. Iguanodon wiggles to the music of a marching band, while Zigongosaurus dances zydeco and Pterodactyal swoops into the crowd. From singing tunes and tossing beads, these big beasts sure know how to party. Laissez les bon temps rugir!”
Activities: Dianne’s website is a treasure trove for parents and teachers with activities for all of her books, including DINOSAUR. You can make Mardi Gras masks, Dinosaur doubloons, and get scripts for plays and skits. I would also think any activities that would include traditional Mardi Gras foods and parade activities (beads anyone?) would be great tie-ins.
Why I Like This Book: I have a soft spot for books that are entertaining, but also pass on the culture and traditions of a particular place. A child who might never visit Louisiana, New Orleans, or attend a Mardi Gras parade will learn by osmosis a bit of what it is like for people (or dinosaurs) who do. And of course the refrain is so fun to say and play.
