I interrupt this blog to inform you that THIS IS MY 500th POST!! Who knew I had that much to say? (Okay, don’t answer that…) In seriousness, I’m so happy to reach this milestone because of you, dear readers. Thank you for allowing me to wax poetic about so many things for so long! And now back to the regularly scheduled programming.
I am so excited that Perfect Picture Book Friday has started again! I missed it much over the summer. Plus, I need to get caught up with books from our featured authors from July and August. It’s also a great way to wrap up Random Acts of Publicity week. So it is with great pleasure that I give you today’s selection, Hampire, by July’s 12 x 12 featured author Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen. I had the pleasure of meeting Sudipta this past June and getting our copy signed. Yay!
Harper Collins, July, 2011
Suitable for: Ages 4+
Themes/Topics: Animals, Farm Animals, Fractured Folk Tale, Vampires, Humor, First Impressions
Opening/Synopsis: From Kirkus: “Bardhan-Quallen spins a yarn equally suitable for a campfire gathering or a fireplace cuddle. The rhyming text’s ominous tone hooks readers right away: “On the farm, the critters knew / At night, while they were sleeping, / Past barn and pens, / Past lambs and hens, / a HAMPIRE went out creeping.” Kids will feast on this deliciously scary tale over and over.”
Activities: Sudipta has a teacher’s guide on her website for all of her books, including Hampire.
Why I Like This Book: The premise of this book is so clever! The book has a brilliant build-up of tension that leads to a surprise ending. I am a complete sucker for a “punny” book, and this one is awesome. Howard Fine’s illustrations add to the drama, suspense and humor. There’s no doubt this book is mighty ‘swine.’ Plus I bought it in person from Sudipta and had it signed, which always makes a book extra special. 🙂12 x 12 Featured Author, Authors, Perfect Picture Book Friday, Picture Books, Rhyming · Tags: 12 x 12 Featured Author, Hampire, Julie Hedlund, Perfect Picture Book Friday, Picture Books, Rhyming, Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen, Writer
