Since Debbie Diesen was kind enough to have me as a guest blogger this week, I figured I’d share the book of hers that my kids so adore, The Pout-Pout Fish.

Written by Debbie Diesen, Illustrated by Dan Hana
Farrar, Strauss and Giroux, March, 2008
Suitable for:  Ages 2-8
Themes/Topics:  Ocean, Fish, Moods, Friendship
Opening and brief synopsis:
Deep in the water,
Mr. Fish swims about
With his fish face stuck
In a permanent pout.
Can Mr. Fish get rid of his “dreary wearies,” or is he doomed to gloom forever?
Activities:  Debbie Diesen’s website contains a list of curriculum ideas and activities, all available for free.  She also provides links to the illustrator Dan Hanna’s many add-on activities, including live Pout-Pout films!
Why I Like This Book: I love that my kids love it, and that they say the refrain with me: “I’m a Pout-Pout fish with a Pout-Pout face, so I spread the dreary-wearies all over the place. BLUB…. BLUUUB… BLUUUUUUUB” (they especially love the blubs!) 🙂

  1. I must be a Bluub Bluuuuub, because I had not heard of this book until your guest post. It’s on my checkout list.

  2. I’m waiting for this book to arrive in my Xmas package from the States — can’t wait! The cover illustration is fantastic, and the verse sounds adorable!

  3. Me neither, and I now sooo want to rectify that! Great rhyming, which I am a little focussed on at the moment.

  4. Sounds great! So visually appealing too!

  5. We love the Pout-Pout fish too, and the sequel! I reviewed them on my blog a couple months ago. Love the surprise the first time you read it!

  6. I love The Pout-Pout Fish! And I guess I should have known it would be your pick this week since you guest posted on Debbie’s blog 🙂 Thanks for sharing this great addition to our list! It is totally fun to read that refrain!

  7. I can’t believe I haven’t read this yet, especially since I’ve read and loved The Pout-Pout Fish in the Big-Big Dark!

(When I was roaming around the children’s section of the Barnes and Noble in Roseville, MN back in May of this year, I heard a story being read aloud by one of the staff members. As I attuned my ear to the rhyme and rhythm, I thought, “The Pout-Pout Fish!” It was a moment of true delight, as I’d “met” Deborah through her blog previous to that experience.)

  8. Perfect picture book for you today. After reading Debbie’s blog, it occurred to me that it would be a wonderful choice! Can’t believe I have never read this book. Thank you for selecting this treasure. Will have to review it at some point.

  9. Sounds delightful! We all get the gloomies and it’s nice to have company when one is miserable. I haven’t read it but like others I want to rectify this. I’m putting it on my must read pile. The library knows me as one to put books on hold and that’s what I’ll do with this if it’s so popular as to be out when I go there next time~soon. 🙂

  10. An adorable book! Rhyme and repetition are so great for emergent readers. Cute illustrations as well! Thank you for sharing, Julie!

  11. sounds like a fun read-aloud book! will have to try it out on my kids.

  12. I have seen this book before and never thought to read it. I think I will now! 🙂

  13. What a beautiful book Julie. I would grab it the minute I saw it, the artwork is just lovely and I love the colours. He is adorable.

  14. Oh this sounds adorable! I love rhyme and repetition books. The illustrations look great too!
