My sweet girl looking so grown up as Hermia!

My sweet girl looking so grown up as Hermia!

Here’s this week’s Gratitude Sunday, capping off a fantastic spring week!

Quotes on Gratitude

“Start a huge, foolish project, like Noah… it makes absolutely no difference what people think of you.” — Rumi

“Let us dream of tomorrow where we can truly love from the soul, and know love as the ultimate truth at the heart of all creation.” — Michael Jackson

“Every heart that has beat strongly and cheerfully has left a hopeful impulse behind it in the world, and bettered the tradition of mankind.” — Robert Louis Stevenson

Gratitude List for the week ending May 19

  1. My lovely daughter knocked the role of Hermia in her class performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream out of the PARK – even with a broken toe!
  2. Speaking of broken toes, the doctor said hers is healing well and she’ll be able to get the pins out in two weeks.
  3. I visited Jay’s class to present A TROOP IS A GROUP OF MONKEYS. It was the first time I’ve shown the app to a large group of children, and it was so rewarding to see them bounce around to the song, jump up with eagerness to touch the animals and race themselves to the front to get their bookmarks!
  4. I finished my welcome video for my website! It’s been a work in progress ever since I agreed to be the poster-girl of vidiots for Katie Davis’ Video Idiot Boot Camp.
  5. Speaking of Katie Davis, Stacey Williams – who is my publisher at Little Bahalia – was on the Brain Burps About Books podcast talking about storybook apps, including TROOP and my upcoming A SHIVER OF SHARKS.
  6. Jay’s first grade teacher is retiring, and I was able to attend her retirement party and thank her for being such a fantastic teacher for both of my kids. I’m happy for her but sorry for all the younger kids who won’t get to have her for a teacher.
  7. Lovely evenings to do celebratory dinners outside with the kids.
  8. Fun happy hour with friends on Friday evening
  9. Waking up to the sound of birds chirping
  10. Giving myself time to write in my journal

What are you grateful for this week?

From my kids this morning

From my kids this morning

Happy Mother’s Day to those celebrating today! For me, two of the things I am most grateful for EVERY DAY are my children and my own mother. I got the jackpot of wonderfulness in both. Case in point: my kids brought me tea in bed this morning along with “Why my mom inspires me,” poems. Now, take a look at the tea tag on the cup. Pretty amazing, huh? So I think I’m set up to have the best Mother’s Day ever – especially since we’ll be going to brunch with my mom too!

Quotes on Gratitude

“Gratitude is the creative force, the mother and father of love. It is in gratitude that real love exists. Love expands only when gratitude is there.” — Sri Chinmoy

“Every mother is like Moses. She does not enter the promised land. She prepares a world she will not see.” — Pope Paul VI

“Motherhood: All love begins and ends there.” — Robert Browning

Gratitude list for the week ending today, May 12 (Mother’s Day)

  1. For my own mother. Everything that has been possible in my life is because of her.
  2. For my kids. It is an honor to be their mother, watch them grow, and witness them becoming amazing individuals.
  3. Friday movie night with the kids. Pizza, popcorn and snuggles.
  4. My daughter wrote down all the reasons I inspire her, put it in a frame and gave it to me for Mother’s Day. A treasure.
  5. My son wrote me a five-star, framed review of A TROOP IS A GROUP OF MONKEYS! :-)
  6. The trailer for A SHIVER OF SHARKS went live on Friday. I’m in love. Little Bahalia did an outstanding job producing it.
  7. For spring weather, green grass, tulips and outdoor runs
  8. Meeting Cynthia Morris, one of my mentors and coaches, in person for lunch. She was a huge part of the reason I had the courage to launch the Writer’s Renaissance retreat, and I loved being able to thank her face to face.
  9. A productive work week. I’m starting to feel as if I might be able to dig myself back out of the hole I’ve been in since the middle of March!
  10. Having the privilege of announcing the first 12 x 12 member who found an agent through the challenge. Congratulations again to Pat Miller!

My Brave Girl

My Brave Girl

Well the big drama this week was my 10 year-old daughter having surgery on a broken toe. But I was glad to be able to help calm and comfort her.

Quotes on Gratitude

“Miracles start to happen when you give as much energy to your dreams as you do to your fears.” — Richard Wilkins

“Gratitude is an opener of locked-up blessings.” — Marianne Williamson

“He who is not contented with what he has would not be contented with what he would like to have.” — Socrates

Gratitude list for the week ending May 4

  1. Em’s surgery on her broken toe went very well, so now she is on her way to healing!
  2. The fact that Em was couch-bound for a couple of days gave me a chance to catch up on some favorite movies with her, including The Princess Diaries 1 and 2 and Harry Potter 1 and 2.
  3. A snowy beginning of the week has given way yet again to spring.
  4. The melting snow has made the grass green. The contrast between the green down here and the mountains caked with snow in the distance is nothing short of breathtaking.
  5. I made a recipe I learned at the Writer’s Renaissance cooking class at Badia a Coltibuono — Fagioli all’ucelletto con salsiccia. Not only was it delicious but BOTH of my kids liked it. Now THAT is a miracle!
  6. Peace and quiet this weekend
  7. My mom’s generosity
  8. The ability to make a video testimonial to thank Katie Davis for all of the skills I have acquired by taking her Video Idiot Boot Camp course. I am truly grateful to be able to make videos as an additional creative outlet.
  9. To the folks who answered my plea to like my Facebook Author Page so I could get to 500 “Likes.” :-)
  10. The iPhone app Viber, which allows free texts and calls internationally.

What are you grateful for this week?

Katie and I enjoy Vin Santo

Katie and I enjoy Vin Santo

Wow, it’s been WAY too long since I’ve written a Gratitude Sunday post, but as many of you know I’ve been on a whirlwind European trip that included hosting the first annual Writer’s Renaissance retreat.

I am still marinating in the memories of the trip, and there will be more to come about the retreat and the experience as a whole. In the meantime, there are so many people who made the trip extraordinary that I wanted to dedicate one post just to thanking them.

The quotes this week are not about gratitude exclusively, but they embody the spirit of Writer’s Renaissance. They come from icons of Florentine history — da Vinci, Michelangelo, Giotto and Dante. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Quotes on Gratitude

“It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things.” — Leonardo da Vinci

“The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short, but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.” – Michelangelo

“Take pleasure in your dreams; relish your principles and drape your purest feelings on the heart of a precious lover.” — Giotto di Bondone

“As flowerlets drooped and puckered in the night turn up to the returning sun and spread their petals wide on his new warmth and light — just so my wilted spirits rose again and such a heat of zeal surged through my veins that I was born anew.” — Dante Alighieri

Gratitude list for the weeks ending April 20

  1. First and foremost, the blue ribbon gratitude award goes to friend-extraordinaire Katie Davis, who not only led two
Keep Calm and Make Friends with an Italian! Thanks Tommaso!

Keep Calm and Make Friends with an Italian! Thanks Tommaso!

outstanding sessions at Writer’s Renaissance, but also kept me sane and happy throughout. Thank you for enduring emotional outbursts, late nights, afternoon naps and a constant obsession over the schedule. I could not imagine having more fun than we did. “Bye, bye wine!” :-)

  2. Thanks to Tommaso at the Hotel Davanzati for riding in on his Italian horse and helping me find two more restaurants for WR after I was treated abysmally by two others – both on the same night. I’m sure it’s not often he has to contend with a grown American woman bursting into tears in his lobby, but he handled it with much patience and grace and, truth be told, some tough love (paraphrasing – “get over it and get back out there”). Thanks also to you and your father Fabrizio for allowing Katie and I, in the words of one of your other guests, to “objectify you” for purposes of our promotional video. ;-)
  3. Speaking of restaurants, Grazie Mille to Enzo at Osteria del Porcellino for hosting WR so beautifully and enthusiastically for our first dinner, but even more so for your friendship, for the dancing :-) , and for bringing me into the Porcellino family for the duration of my stay in Florence.

    2013-04-06 21.06.38Enzo

With Enzo at Osteria del Porcellino

  4. Authors Lisa Clifford and Mary Hoffman christened the WR retreat with fabulous sessions in the gorgeous Boboli gardens and Brancacci Chapel. Your books have also kept me wonderful company these past months, so thank you for writing them! And Mary, as promised, I still chuckle at random times over the dirty joke you told in the chapel cloister. Only at a women’s writing retreat would that happen, right?!?
  5. Andrea, the chef at Badia a Coltibuono and our cooking teacher, was
    NO Canned Beans!!

    NO Canned Beans!!

responsible for capping WR with a grand finale that couldn’t have been improved even with canned beans. ;-) The food “we” made was otherworldly, but even better was the sound of the constant laughter echoing off those ancient walls. Wow!

  6. To Esther, Carolyn, Laura, Cory, Margit and Mary Alice: I meant what I said when I called us the WR family. You ladies will always have an honored place in my heart as the first of those who went on this adventure with me. We packed enough laughter into one week to last me a year, and I will be forever grateful for your trust and friendship. Alla prossima volta! (til next time)
  7. To Cristina, Daniel, Maria, Martina and yes, our dear Lorenzo, plus all of the other wonderful staff at Antica Torre
    Saluti!

    Saluti!

Tornabuoni. During our stay with you we felt, not like guests, but like treasured friends.

  8. My dear, dear friend Diana and her husband Renato hosted me again for a couple of days in Milan after the retreat. Diana and I are soul sisters separated by an ocean, and while no amount of time is ever enough, we always seem to be able to make the most of what we get. Thank you for the heart-to-heart, the wonderful food and simply for being you!!
  9. Thanks again to Mary Hoffman and also Lucy Coats for adopting me in London and helping me find my way out of the book fair. I might still be clanging around in there if it weren’t for you guys!! You two, plus new friends Michelle, Anne and Diane were so wonderful to include me in your festivities.
  10. Thanks to my long-lost friend Pietro for taking time out of his insanely busy schedule to reconnect in London. It never ceases to amaze me how, with old friends, you can pick up where you left off as if no time had passed. In our case 20 years had gone by, and yet it could have been yesterday. As you get older, those touchstones into the past become all the more precious, and there is nothing quite like spending time with someone who knew you in your youth – for better or worse. ;-)
  11. Last, but most definitely not least, I must add a bonus item to this week’s list to thank Nancy, Phil, my mother and Laurie for making it possible for me to do the trip in the first place. Knowing the kids, the house and the dog were in good hands made all the difference!!

Forgive me if this post is overly effusive. I’m simply overcome with emotion by all of the blessings that were bestowed upon me during this trip, and this list barely scratches the surface on the total.

Writer’s Renaissance is all about helping women fill their lives with creativity, passion and purpose. As the title suggests, it’s about rebirth, rejuvenation and renewal. Regular readers of this blog know that this past year has been an exceptionally difficult one for me. How amazing to find that in the pursuit of my goal to help other women transform their lives, so too was my own transformed.

The past year has indeed been full of many dark days. But now I see the light at the end of the Ponte Vecchio!

What are you grateful for this week?

The tag on my YogiTea today. Just in case I was going to forget the lesson I had learned…

I must admit I feel a little down in the dumps as I embark upon my 4th night in a row of feeling far less than stellar (and yet… I am able to write this post, which is more than I would have been able to do even hours ago, so that’s something…)

This week’s post is dedicated to the fine people of the Massachusetts General Hospital ER, the two paramedics who drove me there in an ambulance and the woman on duty with 911 Thursday night. They all stood in sharp contrast to the staff of the hotel where I was staying, who did nothing, and I do mean nothing, to help me when I needed it most.

I was in Boston to participate in a panel on writing Storybook Apps at the AWP conference. The panel went exceptionally well, and I had a great time.

Unfortunately, shortly thereafter I was hit with the neurovirus/fast-acting acute stomach flu that has been going around. I figured I’d suffer through on my own in the hotel room and then slowly nurse myself back to health.

However, after five hours of unrelenting illness, I had a particularly severe bout where afterward, I saw stars and then blacked out momentarily. I don’t think it was for very long, but after “coming to” on the floor of the the bathroom, I decided it wasn’t safe for me to be that sick on my own in a hotel room where nobody knew me.

I made my way to the front desk where I asked not one, but three people where the nearest hospital was, thinking I would take a taxi. NONE of them knew. I could barely stand up straight by this time and asked if someone could help me to the restroom. One woman pointed me in the general direction and left me to my devices. I didn’t think I could face asking more people for help, so I called 911 to find out which hospital to go to. I made this call from the floor of the lobby restroom.

The woman from 911 spoke to me in the endearing Boston accent:

“Where ah ya, honey?”

I had no idea. “Park Place? Plaza Hotel? Copley Place? Back Bay? South Bay? Any of this sound familiar?” Then I had to hang up.

Luckily, they called me back and by using their geolocation technology, had figured out where I was and told me an ambulance was coming.

“Oh no, no. That’s okay. Just tell me which hospital to go to and I’ll take a taxi.”

“Have ya seen the weather out there sweethaht? It’s a blizzard an ‘yer sick. Just have the doorman be on the lookout so they can find you.”

Back to the hotel staff, who told me the doorman had been gone for hours and I should wait between the two sets of sliding glass doors leading outside. I couldn’t stand, so once again, I slumped to the floor.

Two minutes later, when that ambulance pulled up and the paramedic jumped out to get me, I swear I’d never been so happy to see a person in my whole life. He held my hand the whole way to the ER and gave me the kind of assistance I’m sure a cabbie would not have been happy about.

Now, if you’ve ever been to an ER in the middle of blizzard in an urban area, you know there will be folks there trying to take shelter from the storm. So when they wheeled me in, I was blasted with the smell of blood alcohol. My paramedic took one look at my face and told the folks at the check-in desk that they could come to me for my info later because, “We gotta get her outta here.”

Whereupon he wheeled me straight into a room and got me set up in a bed and brought me blankets. I apologized for his trouble, and he said, “It was my pleasure, miss. You feel much better now, ya hear?”

Within 10 minutes, I had been given my first dose of anti-nausea medication (intravenously) and was hooked up to an IV drip of electrolyte solution. Ahhh.

My gratitude list this week contains a few of the many other kindnesses I received from the hospital staff that night. But the most important thing that came out of this experience was my realization that my life has been out of balance for a while. When you have nothing to see but the four walls of a hotel room for 36 hours, you do get some time for reflection.

I am exceptionally blessed to love what I do for a living. But even good things can be taken to extremes. Lately I’ve been putting work ahead of just about everything except my kids – exercise, cooking, sleeping, reading, visiting with friends – basically anything recreational. Broccoli is good for you, but not if you eat it to the exclusion of everything else. I have to remember the same is true of life. When it gets out of balance, you get sick. I need to create a better balance – starting now.

So yes, it is possible to find a way to be grateful for getting sick. ;-)

Quotes on Gratitude

“A healthy attitude is contagious but don’t wait to catch it from others. Be a carrier.” — Tom Stoppard

“Healing is a matter of time, but it is sometimes also a matter of opportunity.” — Hippocrates

“‘Tis healthy to be sick sometimes.” — Henry David Thoreau

Gratitude list for the week ending March 9

  1. My doctor came in immediately and wasted no time ordering the anti-nausea meds and the fluids.
  2. Likewise, the nurse was equally prompt, and he had me hooked up in minutes.
  3. My muscles ached so badly, it was as if they were on fire. It hurt to lay in the bed. When I mentioned this to the doctor during one of his check-ins, he ordered an intravenous dose of an ibuprofen-type medication to help me feel better. It worked.
  4. I got so cold from the IV drip that, despite the two blankets I already had, my teeth were chattering. The nurse noticed and brought me two extra blankets that had obviously just come out of some toaster oven-type appliance. Instant warmth!
  5. A woman from registration came and brought me a phone number I could call to complete my registration in a day or two “once I felt better.”
  6. My nurse got tied up with another patient, so my doctor brought me ginger ale. Let me repeat that. My DOCTOR brought me ginger ale (plus two extra cans to take back to the hotel with me). Much is said about the state of health care in this country, most of it not very flattering. My experience at this hospital reminded me of the many individuals on the “front lines” that care first and foremost about treating sick people.
  7. I must also applaud the miracle that is modern medicine – especially anti-nausea medication – which not only made my illness bearable, but enabled my body to accept the fluid it so desperately needed.
  8. After finding out I was a children’s author (and after I was feeling better), the doctor came in and asked me to recommend some books for his 5 year-old son who, in his words, was a reluctant reader. I loved that he cared so much about nurturing his son’s love of reading that he came to ask. By then I was feeling so much better and so grateful for his care, I wrote him a whole list before I left!
  9. When I checked out, the nurse walked me down the hall to a phone with a direct line to a cab company so I wouldn’t have to wait outside or for long.
  10. When I finally crawled back into my bed that night, I felt I had been truly taken care of.

I’m finding it difficult to believe that, because I missed a couple of Sundays recently, my 100th Gratitude Sunday post is now sandwiched between Friday’s tragic events in Connecticut and the Mayan’s forecasted end of the world.

I already said my piece about Newtown, and I expect to wake up on the morning of December 22nd. I wouldn’t mind if the world was altered so that what took place in Connecticut on Friday could never happen again. But I think we’ll find that it’s still up to us to create that world. One way to do that is to continue practicing gratitude.

I made this video a month ago as a gift to everyone who reads this blog. It’s comprised of some of my favorite quotes on gratitude. All of them have appeared in a Gratitude Sunday post at some point over the past two years.

I will warn you that a few of these quotes might seem difficult to accept in the aftermath of tragedy. Yet, that is why we call it a gratitude “practice.” Feeling, much less expressing, gratitude is not always easy. But as I’ve said before, it’s in the face of hardship that the practice is most important.

Here is the video. I hope it uplifts you now and whenever you might come back to watch it.

Getting a great deal more excited to visit him in April!

The biggest and most unexpected gift I got this week was a video jingle from 12 x 12 in 2012 member Tim McCanna. You can see it on the 12 x 12 page, but I’ve included it at the end of this post too. Even if you are not a member – or a writer – it’s worth watching. It’s simply fantastic. Thanks Tim!

Quotes on Gratitude

“Gratitude is one of the least articulate emotions, especially when it is deep.” — Felix Frankfurter

“Gratitude helps you to grow and expand; gratitude brings joy and laughter into your life and into the lives of all those around you.” — Eileen Caddy

“Good men and bad men differ radically. Bad men never appreciate kindness shown them, but wise men appreciate and are grateful. Wise men try to express their appreciation and gratitude by some return of kindness, not only to their benefactor, but to everyone else.” — Buddha

Gratitude list for the week ending November 10

  1. Once again, I have to say the “video jingle” Tim McCanna made for 12 x 12 just blew me completely away. Did I also mention he’s doing the music and narration for A TROOP IS A GROUP OF MONKEYS? I have no doubt that one day I’ll be able to say, “I knew him when…”
  2. Speaking of TROOP, I am grateful to everyone who signed up to be a TROOPer and to purchase the app on its release day. I’m touched by the willingness of friends and family to help make the app a success in a market where it’s tough to get noticed.
  3. Both of my kids won their basketball games yesterday, but most importantly, they love playing.
  4. Another fantastic Margareaders meeting with a great discussion of the book WILD, by Cheryl Strayed
  5. Close win for Michigan in OT against Northwestern. But “a W is a W” as they say.
  6. Homemade crockpot chili
  7. A Twilight movie marathon with my cousin (and fellow Twitard) in advance of Breaking Dawn II
  8. After schlepping kids around to basketball games all morning and afternoon in cold, wet, slushy snow, being able to come home, don comfy clothes and have nowhere to go for the rest of the day and night.
  9. A productive work week
  10. Finally receiving my copy of DAVID, by Writer’s Renaissance faculty member Mary Hoffman. I read half of it in one sitting yesterday! It’s making me even more excited to go see him when we’re in Florence.

Champagne and Chicken Noodle Soup at Book Club - yum!

My cup runneth over with friendship this week, both in support of some of the difficult times I’ve had lately and celebrating my first publishing contract. Visits and calls from family and friends near, far and virtual have made this an amazing week!

Quotes on Gratitude

“When you are grateful, fear disappears and abundance appears.” — Anthony Robbins

“It is impossible to be both grateful and depressed. Those with a grateful mindset tend to see the message in the mess. And even though life may knock them down, the grateful find reasons, if even small ones, to get up.” — Steve Maraboli

“Not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them, is the true measure of our thanksgiving.” — W.T. Purkiser

Gratitude list for the week ending September 15

  1. The announcement of my first publishing contract!
  2. My hippos! (courtesy of amazing artist Kristen Gjerdset)
  3. Took the kids out to dinner after my daughter’s rehearsal on Tuesday and we had a great time together

A BLOAT of hippopotamuses - one of the illustrations for TROOP by artist Kristen Gjerdset

  4. Celebrating with the Margareaders
  5. Celebrating with my in-person critique group
  6. My friend Julie (yes, another one), who turned book club into a hot tub/slumber party!
  7. The discovery of a new (to me) running trail
  8. My publisher – Stacey Williams-Ng at Little Bahalia. We have so much fun working together!
  9. Reading The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to the kids
  10. Tracey Cox, who reminded me of the Snoopy dance, which is how I felt after the blog announcement went live! I’ve included a Snoopy dance video for your viewing pleasure, in the hope that it will set the tone for your week. :-)

As a lead-in to this week of Thanksgiving, here’s Gratitude Sunday.  The above is a little video of Jay’s Kindergarten class singing a song called Thanks a Lot.  The video is not much to look at, but if the sound of those little voices singing doesn’t melt your heart, I don’t know what will.  I’m sure you can guess which one is Jay…

Quotes on Gratitude

“I cannot believe that the inscrutable universe turns on an axis of suffering; surely the strange beauty of the world must somewhere rest on pure joy!” — Louise Bogan

“Thanksgiving Day comes, by statute, once a year; to the honest man it comes as frequently as the heart of gratitude will allow.” — Edward Sandford Martin

“Thanksgiving comes to us out of the prehistoric dimness, universal to all ages and all faiths.  At whatever straws we must grasp, there is always a time for gratitude and new beginnings.”  — J. Robert Moskin

Gratitude List for the week ending November 19

  1. My blogiversary! I was so touched by all of your amazing comments and I’m ever grateful to you for taking your valuable time to read this blog.
  2. We had a rough start to the evening, but we took the kids to see The Lion King at the Denver Center for Performing Arts, and they loved it.
  3. Visiting Jay to celebrate Thanksgiving with his Kindergarten class on Friday (see video).
  4. Meeting with my new in-person picture book critique group for the first time.
  5. Watching Em in a musical performance of Pigs Over Colorado, a book written by local author Kerry Lee MacLean.  The new music teacher at the kids’ school has done a fantastic job of revitalizing the music curriculum.
  6. Both kids got excellent first trimester report cards.
  7. Stacy Jensen, for having me guest post on her blog.
  8. The School Food Project hosted a “Make a Rainbow on Your Plate” day at the kids’ school where they eat all the colors of the rainbow off the salad bar.  A great response to the “pizza is a vegetable” debacle our government has inflicted on the school lunch program.
  9. I got to read on throughout the entire flight on the way to Virginia because the kids watched a movie.
  10. We arrived in Virginia in one piece yesterday and had a fun and relaxing dinner that Phil’s parents had prepared for us.

Me (channeling Cruella) and my French Poodle

It was a big week in the Hedlund house.  Em performed in her very first musical – 101 Dalmations.  She was amazing in her role and most importantly, had a blast!  Her enthusiasm was infectious, and we are so proud of her.  Not only that, but after the show I had just enough time to take off her makeup, get her changed and take her to play in her first basketball game of the season.  Even though she must have been tired, she played her little heart out.  Yes, kids can definitely teach us something about joy and commitment.  She loved every minute of both, and to say that I am grateful to have her as my daughter would be an epic understatement.  Without further adieu, here’s the list for the week.

Quotes on Gratitude

“Even after all this time,
The sun never says to the earth,
“You owe me.”
Look what happens with
A love like that.
It lights the whole sky.” — Hafiz of Persia

“The deepest craving of human nature is the need to be appreciated.” — William James

“The easiest way I have found to humble myself back into a state of peaceful grace is through the act of gratitude.” — Jill Bolte Taylor

Gratitude list for the week ending November 12

  1. Em in her play! Such a treat to see all their hard work come together in an amazing performance.
  2. Jay coming up behind Em after the play, giving her a big hug and saying, “You were so great!”
  3. The Girls Leadership Institute, which is running a month-long program at Em’s school for 2nd and 3rd graders, teaching them how to be strong, stand up and speak up for themselves and others.  It’s a mother-daughter program, and I’m learning as much as she is!
  4. My oldest nephew won first place in the Varsity debate tournament and he’s only a freshman!  He’s a chip off the old block (my brother) and his old block (my father)
  5. Is there anything as precious as a newborn baby's feet?

There isn’t much good news coming out of Greece these days, but a close friend of mine became an uncle last Sunday when his sister gave birth to a little boy – Kostakis.  There is nothing like a brand new life to remind you of what really matters.

  6. Warm enough weather to take two outdoor runs this week.
  7. Take-out food – it’s what kept us alive during this very busy week!
  8. The Margareaders (my book club). We had a great discussion about Unbroken at our meeting this week. I’ve never failed to have a blast at our meetings.
  9. Watching the gorgeous full moon rising on the horizon.
  10. Rocky made friends with two of the sheep that live behind our yard.  It’s so fun to watch them interact.  Now he is trying to dig a hole underneath the fence to reach his new friends.  The llamas, however, are still the mortal enemy. :-)

The presence of a fence and a difference in species poses no barrier to true friendship
