Just a quick note to say my two critique sessions went well yesterday. An editor from a big publishing house moderated each one, although the second one I got acquires mostly middle-grade and YA. The other participants were fellow writers in all genres – picture books, easy readers, middle grade and YA. Although having eight other people (including an editor) critique your work right in front of you is akin to having your heart taken out with a spoon, the feedback I got was invaluable and probably would have taken me a year to figure out on my own. Nobody offered to buy either of my stories, but I do feel like I am moving in the right direction. I got very positive reactions from the other writers. The editors are more close to the vest, but I got decent vibes and excellent direction. I’ve also met some amazing people who I already consider friends. It’s very invigorating and inspiring to be surrounded by people who are all in the same boat and share a passion for writing.
Now, however, I’m completely brain dead. Luckily I get to sit and be a sponge for the rest of the conference and learn as much as I can. Once I have time to process everything I’m taking in here, I’ll write about it more detail. For now, I need to fortify myself with some caffeine.
As a side note – four people told me yesterday that they liked my outfit! 🙂Categories: Children's Books, SCBWI, Works in Progress, Writing · Tags: Children's Books, Publishing, SCBWI, Writing
