But we’re not Livin’ on a Prayer. We’ll make it – I swear!  Sorry!! I have 80s music stuck in my head as you’ll soon see.

Welcome to the 12 x 12 in 2012 official “Halfway There” Blog Party!! Woo Hoo!

Now, I figured I could go in one of two directions with this. I could either, as the host of the blog party and the challenge, get all gushy and sentimental about how much you all mean to me and how grateful I am for this group… OR, I could humiliate myself in front of hundreds, potentially thousands, of people. So naturally I chose the latter. First, I wrote lyrics for a parody of (You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party), now entitled, (You Got A) Right to Rewrite (Your Story). (I should mention this idea was inspired by Tara Lazar last week when she wrote her own lyrics to “Shot Through the Heart”)

THEN, I decided to make a video to go with the lyrics. A video with ME as the rapper.

Which I did. As proof, I am including this photo of me taking my first sip of a gargantuan-size glass of wine after recording (the recording

Needed that drink after all that dancing!

was followed by HOURS of practicing my routine. People, I am sore in places I didn’t even know existed. I am no cheerleader anymore, I tell you…). In the photo, I am still clad in my hastily improvised rapper gear.

Lucky for me, I have a couple of good friends who wouldn’t let me make a fool out of myself without TOTALLY making a fool out of myself. Apparently, I just didn’t get my video to the high quality of humiliation that my test audience was expecting.

So what I am going to do today is share the lyrics to what I now consider the 12 x 12 anthem, along with a pledge: I will produce and record myself rapping an EPIC (or at least not totally sucky) video for the grand 12 x 12 finale at the end of the year (yes, there will be one!). Your job is to read the lyrics and watch the real video so you have the proper point of reference in December. Sound like a deal? Cool. Here they are. If you are planning to participate in this Blog Party, please read down to the bottom for instructions. Thanks! Now let’s PAAAAAAAARTY!!

(You Got A) Right To Rewrite (Your Story)

You hate your latest draft and you don’t wanna write.

You ask your muse, “Please?” but she still takes flight.

You wrecked two stanzas with such bad rhyme

And your crit group tears it up like it’s some kinda crime.

You gotta right… to rewrite… your stooooory!

Your boss caught you blogging and he says, “No pay!”

That hypocrite’s on Facebook all day.

Man, finish your scene and that’s a wrap.

Now you can eat some junk and then take a nap.

You gotta right… to rewrite… your stooooory!

I don’t care if you’re so blocked that you start pulling out your hair

Grab a cub of hot tea and put your butt in that chair!

My kids busted in and said, “What’s that book?”

Aw, come on over here and you can take a look!

You gotta right… to rewrite… your stooooory! (x2)

Stoooooory!

Stoooooory!

Here's me toasting after I (literally) let my hair down post-performance. Here's to us! Here's to you! Here's to HALFWAY!

I hope you enjoy the anthem! 🙂

P.S. Many thanks to my long-suffering mother who spent 1.5 hours with me recording a video that will not be shown. You’re the best, Mom!!

If you are participating in this Blog Party, here are the instructions:

  1. Write and publish a post on your blog celebrating (or lamenting) the halfway point of the 12 x 12 challenge between today (June 25) and July 2.

ETA: The Linky List DOES work – YAY. BUT (and there had to be a but), the list is only visible once you click the link. For some reason, my blog doesn’t want to accept the javascript that would make the links visible within the post. I’m sure there’s a way around this, but I can’t figure it out right now (since it’s 2:00 a.m.). Bear with me as this is my first time hosting one of these thingamabobs.

  1. Yay! Let the partying begin! (Yes, I’m up late. Yes, I’m ready to party. Well, after a little snooze.) Love your revamped lyrics to the rap. It’s going to be awfully hard to wait until the end of December to see you perform it!

Thanks to you for this wonderful entity known as 12 x 12. You are a ROCK STAR!

  2. I second the thanks, Julie! (Oh, and I am the second to comment…does that mean something?)
Your idea has blossomed into a wonderful flower of creativity for all of us. 🙂 Can’t wait to read all of the posts that will be linked in the next couple of days. Love your rap…what fun!

    • Julie Hedlund

@Beth @Vivian – it seems we were all up late partying! Hope you weren’t hungover the next day – LOL

  3. Philip Hedlund

I, of course, have to see the video!

  4. Oh What fun! I couldn’t wait to get home from work in the dark, race inside and put the laptop on so I could post my party piece…loL.
Loved your rap piece Julie and after getting the rythmn right, I read it out to my hubby… he thought it was cool! So we are sitting down to dinner and a large glass of wine to. Cheers!! Bottoms Up!!!

  5. Thanks, Julie, it’s been a great half year so far. I’ve written seven so far, two of which are being sent round to publishers by my agent, three of which are doing the rounds with my various crit groups and one of which will be soon (the January one is definitely on the back-burner till I come up with a radical rethink). Overall, a really productive year so far, with five more to go… It’ll be great to hear where people’s manuscripts are by the end of the year -what’s been reedited, what’s been sent out, what’s been picked up by competitions, magazine and of course, publishers to be made into a picture book… Thanks for all your enthusiasm,
With very best wishes (and looking forward to joining you remotely for your rap in December. I’ll join in with my children… Clare.

    • Julie Hedlund

I agree that we’ll REALLY start to party once success stories come rolling in. Which they will soon I have no doubt!

  6. Yay for halfway! And I wonder if I’ll ever get this song out of my head. (Will you??)

  7. You’re flippin awesome, Julie! LOVE this rap and love the community and creative boost you have created for us. I still haven’t started a June manuscript, and we have the final week of term this week plus I am packing up my house and life and don’t know where I am going, but I will try and get a post up by Sunday, if not, you know that I am partying with you all and count it a privilege to be part of 12×12 in 2012!

    • Julie Hedlund

Wow, that is a lot going on Joanna. I’ll forgive you if you can’t find the time to post. 🙂

  8. I wish you guys the best. I’ll be reading all the hoopla! posts and smiling, thinking what a lucky girl I am to be a part of 12 x12. Have a wonderful time. Clink. Cheers! 🙂

  9. Congratulations to everyone! When you’ve reached the finish line, I think you need to post photos of the actual dancing! 🙂

  10. Ellen L. Ramsey

Inspired by your anthem, I’m off to work on rewrites!

  11. Kathy Phillips

Yay! I love parties! Love the new rapper you, too 🙂

  12. Party time!!! It’s actually “Kid’s Day” in our town, so everything from community pools to museums, movies, lunch is free…wish I could bring you all with us!

And yes…when you’ve reached the finish, post videos of the dancing!

  13. You’re COOL! 😉 I’m doing the halfway blog party, but *ahem* I could never match yours. *wink*

  14. HURRAY!!!!! It’s here! It’s here! 🙂

  15. Wahoo, we’re half way!!! That was great Julie! Well done 😉

    • Julie Hedlund

@Erik – It is indeed – loved your post too! @Jennifer – thanks for your awesome post!

  16. Woohoo! Halfway!! Well, almost for me — still need to write my June MS, but I have 5 under my belt in various stages of revision. This has been a really productive year, especially considering I had only ONE completed manuscript last year. Thank you Julie for dreaming up this crazy challenge, and thanks to everyone for the great camaraderie and support. It’s VERY motivating. Now, please pass me that pitcher of sangria. 🙂

    • Julie Hedlund

I’m so glad the challenge has been productive for you Carrie. Here’s your well-deserved sangria!

  17. That’s fantastic Julie and I love the pictures! Thanks so much for organising 12×12 it is such fun and very motivating. Woo hoo!

  18. So true, though. You’ve got to write in order to rewrite that story. Great lyrics. : )

  19. LOVE the lyrics and your creativity, Julie!! Believe it or not, I won tickets to see the Beastie Boys in concert when I was in high school. Your lyrics are much better…!

  20. Can’t wait to see the video. (And double thanks to your mom for her behind the scenes support!) Loved your song. LOL!

    • Julie Hedlund

      @Catherine – you are welcome @Beth – too true! @Kathy – I’m jealous! @Hannah – my poor mother appreciates your gratitude. 🙂

  21. That was a lot of fun to read. But I was really looking forward to the video! I guess I’ll have to wait. I know it’s going to be an awesome production! I am RSVPing for the party. I’ll see you in a few days.

  22. Great jobs on the lyrics there, Julie! Congratulations everyone, I’m excited about reading everyone’s posts. Cheers everyone!

  23. Fun post and great anthem. You are very creative! Enjoyed readng the post. Didn’t get a sixth MS written in June as I’ve been working or revisions. Have one in my head, and a few lines on paper but that doesn’t count unless I hustle before Saturday. Great challenge for all. Congratulations!

    • Julie Hedlund

@Pam – thanks! @Pat – I’m not sure I’m going to get one finished in June either. School is out now, we’ve been traveling and I’ve been working on other projects. But alas, there’s always next month!

  24. Oh. MY. LORD.

Tears, Julie!! The tears are streaming down my face!! I’m just laughing soooo bloody hard!! Fabulous job… I think MCA (RIP) and the rest of the boys would bow before you!

    PAARRRTTTAAAYYYY!!!! We’re half-way through!!!!

  25. You’re hilarious! I CANNOT WAIT to see the video in December!

    • Julie Hedlund

I’ll probably regret making the promise to produce one, but I know it will be fun.

  26. Amazing. I’ve got to get my party plans in gear!

  27. Awesome – totally!! Am planning the party as I write. Fireworks, sparklers, marching band, ….well – it’s not written in stone yet….

  28. Elizabeth Stevens Omlor

    AWESOME post! 🙂

  29. Love it! I see a song writing career in your future.

  30. I’ll be writing my post soon…you’ve put your heart into this, haven’t you Julie?? You are an inspiration!

  31. Link #8 isn’t working for me on the blop! Please help I don’t want to be a party blooper!

    • Julie Hedlund

It didn’t work for me either. If you go to the FB page, it’s Ramona Davey’s post. It works from the link she provided there.

    • Julie Hedlund

@Laura Anne – can’t wait! @Elizabeth – Thanks! @Sally – only if I don’t have to write the music to accompany it! 🙂 @Jarm – can’t wait for your post. @Julie – you can get the link from the FB page.

  32. How will we wait until December??? As if waiting for Santa isn’t hard enough???? Keep that video safe because it is on my Christmas list!!!!

Thanks so much Julie for 12 x 12!

  33. Brilliant parody! Of course, you can’t go wrong with the combination of the Beastie Boys and a talented writer! Happy halfway, Julie!

  34. Julie. You are seriously inspiring…made my day reading this post lol! Can’t wait to get my post up and that Pb revised…well, have to wait as am heading to work. Go team 12 by 12!!!! Partay indeed!

  35. Woo hoo! I have written 14+ pb ms in the first half of the year. I hope you plan to continue on to a 13 x 13 in 2013 challenge. We can squeeze that extra one in somewhere. In any case, I am busy dancing on a ceiling – well not really ’cause if I fall down, I might hurt my typing/drawing arm – but I am dancing and celebrating the fabulous manuscripts that the members of this group have written this year! Congratulations to all of us – what a fabulous group of supportive writers and illustrators.

  36. Done and done. And just for the (grammatically correct) record, I put in those apostrophes in my blog post title but the Linky List left them out. 😉

(Thanks, Julie! SO enjoying stretching my PB muscles!)

  37. I replied to your comment on your post, but in case you don’t get to return for your reply and in case I haven’t said it enough: Thanks for hosting the blog party. It’s my first and it’s so much fun! I am so happy to be a part of this wonderful group of writers. I am especially grateful to have met you, Julie! You are an amazing woman to be able to organize such a fabulous event and have time to connect with all the participants. You’re the best! *hugs*

    • Aww, thanks so much Romelle! You are so sweet, and I’m honored to have you in the challenge.

  38. Thanks for the motivation in 2012! The group here is so supportive and keeps me on task to write, write, write.

  39. I love the lyrics Julie. I can’t wait to see the video.

  40. Julie, thank you, thank you! Six months- six manuscripts!

    • @Stacy @Cynthia – thanks to YOU for being here. @Rena – I can’t either – LOL!

  41. Thanks Julie- I’m hanging on by tips of my fingers…only a private party of one for me at the moment. 😀

  42. Julie–loved the party! So many great comments and blogs to explore.
And the video…how in the heck we gonna wait that long ! ? !
As a senior-citizen zumba-ing granddad, I expect it will inspire me to write-on!
    – Damon Dean, SevenAcreSky

    • Julie Hedlund

Damon, I certainly hope it will be inspiring rather than laugh-inducing – LOL!

  43. Julie, this is great. I am going to try to participate in the 12 x 12 blog party, and will if I can get a post together. It’s our Canada Day weekend (July 1 is our celebration day), and I will be heading back to ‘work’ that day for another week of caregiving – so I’ll try between then and Monday to get one written.

Sure wish I could have the energy so many of you seem to have.
Congratulations everyone for all your successes in this 12×12 challenge!

    • Julie Hedlund

Lynn, whenever and if ever you can write a post it will be welcome, but more important is your participation in the challenge. So glad getting to know you!

  44. I have watched your group from afar, the 12×12 Challenge has sounded like such a wonderful thing to be part of… will there be another one, I would love to join in.
